The first few times we went to Stomps the food was about perfect. More or less as good as a handmade burger can be expected. I've had a few "just plain cheeseburgers" and my wife only orders the bean burger, all were great. We told everyone we knew how darn good Stomps was and swore off every burger this side of the loop including Tookie's... then the reports came back from family and others. They had bad experiences.
I'm sad to agree that Stomps is hit or miss! I read the reviews that said as much. Apparently this has been going on for years. For my family, the short honeymoon came to a jolting halt. There's an obvious management problem. No excuse. Especially after a few years.
There should be a system. The kitchen? The same process and quality of food regardless of the cook on duty. The house, restrooms, tables should be clean, the parking lot free of debris, grease trap shouldn't smell like a teenaged prankster dropped a stink bomb.
No excuses. It's always "sorry we have a new cook." No, Stomps has had the same cooks since they opened. Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde! In addition to the kitchen, Jeckle & Hyde also manage the menu, the wait staff, the house keeping, the restrooms, parking lot and the grease trap. All of it hit or miss.
I almost feel a little guilty being so harsh. Almost. But really Stomps should feel guilty. Everyone can have a bad day. Things happen in people's lives that are catastrophic and for a time the best they can do is hang on. I can be sympathetic to a part time cook over run during a rush with no back up. But the management by this point should have a "plan B" worked out!
When a super passionate foodie and amateur chef like myself begins to brag, boast, recommend and frequent your restaurant. Only to see it take a re-occurring nose-dive... that breaks my heart. I feel like weeping. I see another American dream with potential flushing down the toilet.
We were going out for a rare family lunch. We almost never go out because it's expensive and because myself and the circle "I run in" cook better than 95% of the possible restaurants within the state. My family choose to go to Stomps as our special place because of their proven potential?
They messed that up. We waited an hour, the order gets messed up, the 2nd order gets messed up, my chili burger had no chili on it. But Mr. Hyde sort of brushed some chili pan drippings over the bun. The onion rings were cold and if not soggy just blah. They had been waiting for almost as long as us.
My 6 year old daughter's, kid sized bean burger was close to burnt. The bun was rock hard and stale. This is no mistake. Mr. Hyde stuck his hand into a plastic bag and touched a rock hard, stale burger bun and decided to feed it to a customer. We didn't eat half our food and just left disappointed. My angry enough to fight but?
A 6 year old Stomps fan! Because Mr. Hyde was too lazy and inconsiderate of his youngest customers to think they would notice. That was the final for me. Our little girls Stomps. We introduced her to burgers here... because we do not eat fast food. When I touched that rock hard, stale bun... that did it! That tells me a lot about the attitude in the kitchen. Feed the stupid kid whatever eh?
I don't know who runs that joint. But you need to get a grip on the kitchen management, food consistency and the attitude. Apparently you forgot you can get closed the heck down with these kind of reviews. And I'm telling everyone I know you fed my child (a big fan of yours)...
Read moreHonestly, I was very excited to eat here as I have heard people talk about how good the burger was. When we sat down a young lady, our waitress, came over and helped us with our drink and food order, I ordered a sprite and a yippi ka yay burger with no onions and no tomatoes with a side of thin onion rings. She later returned with our appetizers of fried jalapeños. They were delicious but she never came back to refill our drinks and they were quite hot. I got up to go to the counter for a refill and I wasn't acknowledged by our waitress at all. 3 times she passed by me and nothing, I finally had to stand in front of her and say may I please have a refill and she said oh alright. I got my drink and went to sit back down. Our burgers and sides finally came out about 40 minutes after ordering. My burger came with tomatoes and onions and I was given a side of thick onion rings. I decided I waited long enough I would just take off the tomatoes and onions and eat the side of thick fried onion rings even though I had ordered thin. The burger was okay but my bread was so saugy like it had been sitting there for while. Then we went to pay up front and this is where the terrible review comes from... the male cashier asks us what table we were sitting at? How in the hell was I supposed to know that? I never was told this nor were the tables labeled. Then he says no worries, what did you order? What the f?! My waitress took my order, she got it wrong and. Ow I have to repeat the entire thing back? My waitress finally came over after standing on the side doing absolutely nothing and handed him some ticket. And of course then the cash register decided to not work after I already swiped my card. So the male cashier went to another computer to help someone else. And I got some other girl, named Miriam who was trying to fix the computer. She kept telling me that my card wasn't charged and to swipe again. I opened my bank account and I was in fact already charged for the meal. She said don't worry it's only pending, swipe again and if we do charge you again we will give you your money back later. What the F?! For a $40 meal now I'm out $80. So I asked to speak to the manager. Some other girl told Miriam to go get AJ in the back and he needs to come to the front. She went and returned saying the manager was unavailable. Which is ridiculous because they were all talking about how AJ was just sitting in the back?! Finally they just swiped my card making me feel embarrassed because they were saying I hadn't paid for my food. Needless to say I left very upset and angry. Checked my account this morning and was in fact charged for both swipes. What was supposed to be A $40 good meal, turned into a $80 sh*t show. I got the Texas Burger which is the BBQ bacon half cheddar half Colby cheese burger with a side of half large onion rings and half fries.
The burger was a very nice portion. I got just the single patty, two would have been too much. The meat was cooked to perfection. I didn't get much flavor from the BBQ sauce which was muted slightly from the saltiness of the burger. I couldn't quit pin down where the salt was coming from. The mix of cheddar and Colby cheese was interesting. It made the cheese gooey and some dropped off the burger. It mixed a bit with the BBQ sauce and might have contributed to the reason I didn't get much flavor from the BBQ. The bun itself was perfect. Toasted slight on the inside and just the right size for the burger.
The onion rings were large. You had the option to choose large or small and I choose the large. The batter was very light but very salty. I only had two. The fries, on the other hand were not salty. They were fried perfectly. The were cut uniformly into the long 2 inch rectangle cubes. The portion for my side was more than enough. Very satisfying.
Finally we had the fried brownie a la mode. It was very tasty! It had a crispy top and bottom layer that was fried with a soft brownie middle. The ice cream on top was drizzled with chocolate syrup and the combo of cold and hot made the first few bits delicious. As we ate more we thought that the fried layer was just a hair to thick but that was our only complaint.
Overall very happy. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the saltiness of the burger and...
