so i’ve been trying to go here for the past 6 years and we just can’t sync our schedules up. last saturday i was up in tieton to get a gift for a friend at tieton nomad and lo and behold, don mateo’s was open! i wasn’t hungry and i was headed to a graduation bbq, but seeing as how this was the first time i had ever seen it open, i thought i had to try it. the papusas were excellent. i had asparagus and cheese and the pickles on top really sent it. we sat outside and it was perfect. i would love to see tieton pop off and don mateo’s get the traffic they deserve.

Simple and small place. Appears the person at the front was the only one who was working there (maybe one other?) Appreciated the menu on a pamphlet I can take home, also the pictures on the wall with the names of the Salvadorian dishes was helpful. Good price for it all. My friend and I ordered the pupusas (there were so many variations of the filling you can choose from) and fried plantains. I was full off two pupusas, and brought the rest of the food home. Overall, straightforward and would come again. A hidden gem in a small town nearby. I recommend.

We happened upon this small town square of Tieton and decided to eat lunch here. The exterior looks like it was recently renovated, which had a nice simple aesthetic appeal. The interior looks like it could use some work, but you really come for the food which is really delicious. My friend ordered the cheese/spinach pupusa and a side of rice/refried beans and plantains. I just got the enchiladas, which had a little kick to it but were still so good. Service was great--friendly and attentive. Highly recommend you check it out if you're in the area!

Well I had 8 years without to taste the pupusas flavor ,I grow up in El Salvador and lived there 40 years, I know the taste the pupusas has to have and this small restaurant didn´t disapointed me, who knows about Los Planes, former pupusodromo 5th of november, pupusas from roundabout in Escalon and Olocuilta will understand, I give them 5 stars, delicious pupusas, really good vinegar cabbage and I add this was awsome I know they are using something speciall to elaborate his sauce, really delicious too, go to this place doesn´t matter the 30 minutes driving if you want a pupusas full experience go and taste it, my recomendation pupusas has to be eaten hot or if you reheated them has to be in a normal oven, no microwave, my best to this lovely and hard working couple, grettings to La Paz for her and Michoacan for him, I really loves salvadorean cuisin tastes

I wish we'd stopped enjoying our food long enough to get a photo! We took a 4-mile detour to check out Don Mateo's and it was worth every yard. Service was friendly and quick. The space is clean and efficient, but comfortable. The food? Yes, so good!! We had chicken mole', three different pupusas, rice and beans and horchata. The rice and beans was a very generous side, enough for a meal for our 9 y/o. The mole' was deep and complex and felt like we'd been invited into someone's kitchen for a meal. The pupusas were very flavorful, spicy, comforting, and the horchata was the best I've had - not very sweet, lovely cinnamon, very refreshing, perfect thing to temper the lovely heat of the food. We will definitely be back and we encourage you to make it one of your detours, too. Thank you to the family for this great experience! (While you are there, check out Nomad Mercantile next door, and take a stroll around the nearby city park to see some cool period buildings and check out what else...

UPDATE OCTOBER 2024: The flautas come filled with chicken and cheese by default, and four is a hefty serving, with a lettuce and cotija salad included. Excellent crunch, good flavor, no notes.

Also exceptional were the street tacos (note: they are not the same as the taquitos, though similarly described). I opted for shredded chicken. Three rather large and perfectly soft corn tortillas were stuffed full of juicy chicken, along with onions and cilantro. The dish also comes with rice, so is quite filling. The rice is fluffy with a soothing broth flavor.

My parents love the carne asada burritos and usually split one between themselves. They also go crazy for their horchata, which comes in large cups.

Pretty darn good food, in a tiny town where any option is appreciated! Their style of making enchiladas is not saucy, but still gets the job done. Quesadillas are tasty, and the taquitos could use some more filling, but we're...
