Read moreI wish we'd stopped enjoying our food long enough to get a photo! We took a 4-mile detour to check out Don Mateo's and it was worth every yard. Service was friendly and quick. The space is clean and efficient, but comfortable. The food? Yes, so good!! We had chicken mole', three different pupusas, rice and beans and horchata. The rice and beans was a very generous side, enough for a meal for our 9 y/o. The mole' was deep and complex and felt like we'd been invited into someone's kitchen for a meal. The pupusas were very flavorful, spicy, comforting, and the horchata was the best I've had - not very sweet, lovely cinnamon, very refreshing, perfect thing to temper the lovely heat of the food. (While you are there, check out Nomad Mercantile next door, and take a stroll around the nearby city park to see some cool period buildings and check out what else...

The rice is fluffy with a soothing broth flavor.
My parents love the carne asada burritos and usually split one between themselves. They also go crazy for their horchata, which comes in large cups.
Pretty darn good food, in a tiny town where any option is appreciated! Their style of making enchiladas is not saucy, but still gets the job done. Quesadillas are tasty, and the taquitos could use some more filling, but we're...
