Ako Sushi & Seafood, 725 North Washington Avenue, Titusville, Florida -0-Stars
Swill Alert!
There were just two customers in the dining room of Ako Sushi & Seafood when I walked in during what should have been a lunch rush at 12:30pm on a Thursday. I took this to mean that either the food there was terrible, or that it served yet-to-be-discovered top-notch cuisine. I hoped for the latter.
My humble waitstaff was Jackie. She was right on the spot but let’s be honest if she couldn’t handle two tables, we would be in trouble.
Although the foundation for sushi is a Chinese dish called narezushi made with salted fish and fermented rice, the Japanese developed sushi into the international bougie status food enjoyed by hipsters around the world, but NOT at Ako Sushi & Seafood.
True Japanese sushi chefs are virtually nonexistent in Brevard. In Japan, a sushi chef—an Itamae—reportedly apprentices this art form for at least ten years. While many Asian restaurants play at sushi, their chefs are not from Japan and have not apprenticed with an Itamae. At least at many other Asian chophouses on the Space Coast, you still get a decent result.
I ordered the Amazing Tuna Roll which wasn’t amazing at all. The presentation was ostentatious, and I think I know why: It was a misdirection because the sushi was putrid. The mystery meat was supposed to be the buttery super white delicacy known as escolar, but I highly doubt it. It had turned yellow, so I was not taking a chance.
The tuna roll came with a miso soup that was just beef broth with a mushroom in it. Yuck. Miso in this case was a misnomer.
I also tried the Steak & Scallop Hibachi. The rice was stale, and the steak was just a low-grade cut up breakfast steak. I had to spit out the scallop because it was so bad.
I was so disgusted by my whole meal that I literally puked in the parking lot on my way out. There is no way I can anodyne the truth. This really happened to me.
The Big Boy says, “Ako Sushi is officially my new pick for Worst Restaurant in Brevard. At least since there were no vehicles in the parking lot, it was easy to...
Read moreOverall had a good experience and would come back. You can tell that they are really trying to do good authentic Japanese food. Many things on the appetizer menu were clearly added by someone familiar with Japanese food, like the Beef negimaki and taco su. Of course they still offer all the American Japanese favorites like all of the crazy sushi rolls and habachi grill stuff. I ordered the dinner beno with sushi and sashimi. The octopus in the taco su was okay quality, it tasted like previously frozen octopus and the ponzu sauce seemed watery but it was overall good flavor. The soft shelled crab was done with an excellent tempura batter and came with some tempura vegetables as well so I think that was a great deal. The bento box was an outstanding value deal coming with my sushi, sashimi, rice, fruit, soup and salad. The soup was amazing. It was not typical miso+water stuff that most Japanese restaurants in America offer. It was a really good mushroom soup that I would love to have anytime. The salad was typical salad with some kind of ginger dressing. The sashimi and sushi were very well prepared, with good cuts done properly and good sizes of fish. Sushi rice for the nigiri was well prepared. The fish was not top quality but was not low quality. The texture was very good and supple, but the taste was just okay. The fried rice was absolutely perfect. The dumplings and shu mai we're probaly frozen ones, but seemed like good quality frozen ones like the ones my Japanese wife and I buy. Honestly I would come back everyday just for that soup and fried rice, but I have high hopes for this place because I can see they are really trying and so will be stopping buy to check and see how things are with the food from...
Read moreWife and I ate an early dinner here, and we were very pleased. Plenty of parking in the large lot. Inside, the place is large and clean and tables are spaced far enough apart to engage in conversation without being heard or overly hearing other people. Japanese music playing in the background was just the right volume and pleasant to hear. And, thank Buddha - NOT A SINGLE TV BLASTING! The menu was extensive and had everything you might want to try, including a variety of rice wines. A sushi bar was available as well. The service was very good, with the waitress being attentive, but not so much that it interfered with your enjoyment of the dinner. The meal was well presented and attractively plated. The food we ordered tasted good and there were no problems with it whatsoever. Prices were reasonable and (with drinks) we spent under $50. Overall a pleasant and quiet dining experience where the wife and I were able to carry on a conversation - difficult to do in most restaurants. If you like, or want to try, Japanese food or sushi, give this place a try - you will like it. UPDATE April 3, 2021 Placed a takeout order for dinner. Ordered a Hibachi Steak dinner and with the steak cooked medium rare. When I got the dinner home I found the steak was very well done, dry and tough. I'll be calling them to complain. The rest of the items we...
