Jorge's Cantina Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Topeka

Jorge's Cook can C-O-O-K!!!! I could write a 5000 word review of this place, but will try to keep it to 4,998 so you can get there now and get Jorge's & the cook's food into your tummy. Jorge's reminds me of the old Carlos O'Kelly's restaurant in that it is FLAVORFUL food without having to be overbearing with chilies/spices. I don't like and can't eat hot & spicy food or food overloaded with cilantro so usually have avoided most of the Mexican food in Topeka. No longer!

I dine out for the food so will start there. DELICIOSO! Everything from the chips & good flavor mild salsa to the to-go beef enchilada I got was perfectly prepared/cooked. I got the Jorge's Special California Burrito with steak. The a la carte enchilada was good even later room temperature (not even heated up) with a pico de gallo that is superb. I hadn't ever had a pico that I liked because most of the time they're the soapy & spicy hot house salsa made with the too much cilantro & chilies. Jorge's is flavor balanced and a true pico!

The California Burrito is unique and fun with what most would consider the plate side dishes of rice & beans actually stuffed inside the burrito. The steak was super tender and the HUGE portions guaranteed I'd be having midnight feastings of it which was a delight itself!

Paulina, my waitress was a delightful leader in my newbie escapade through a menu where I wanted to try everything without fear of being disappointed & with patience since I couldn't decide. She did all my special requests without any problems. While my food was cooking, Jorge + staff we had a miniature "dance party" to the fun music.

I got there at 11 on a regular Friday. By 11:45 the place was completely full (no spare seating) and people were waiting. It brought me back to my travels overseas and truly felt like family & friends being there, not other food patrons which is what Jorge promotes. I even got to talk with Jorge's wife and what a delightful lady as well =)

My wishes are : they were closer to me on my side of town and that they would have some paper menus because I plan on "eating my way though the menu" top to bottom. Parking might be a slight concern for those who are mobility challenged but all minor issues in my eyes.

Google reviews should have an override feature where you can give 1 place a year a rating way above a 5 in the categories because Jorge's truly deserves it. Jorge's in Topeka KS (located on SW Fairlawn Rd and SW West Drive) is a must. Jorge greets all his diners as family or an old friend as they walk through his door. The restaurant has a vibration that encourages celebration, neighborly kindness. This is a great place to celebrate publicly an anniversary, birthday, job promotion etc. Jorge and his team will collectively share your celebration with you. You might even get a ukulele serenade by Jorge himself. He is very busy and is sure to be found talking to one or five of his diners. Additionally Jorge serves up the best fresh margaritas. They are huge and delicious! I has the orange marg with sugar on the rim and fresh orange slices mixed in. The restaurant is bright with lots of festive colors and pictures. If you are planning a Cinco de Mayo celebration this would be a fun place to celebrate! I ordered the ground beef chimichanga. It was large and came out hot. It was delicious. Salsa and queso ordered as well. Very good. Hector was our server. He was welcoming, very polite with a little boujy. Hector represents Jorge's in the best way. It was a great visit. Second attempt at his ownership and I must give a poor rating from the overall combination of both visits. First visit was with a larger group where he stated he didn’t take reservations. So, one of our members went early to hold a large seating area to accommodate us. The atmosphere is a 5, Jordan guides that! Food 3 , nothing better than others. Drinks rate a 5. So, have allllll the drinks before the food. First time, several of our group bills were incorrectly charged. I get your busy but over and over the excuses get old. So ehhhhh, that’s just a con for ripping people off. Second visit, I waited in line and others we were being seated first come first serve. Then after 20 minutes of standing in line and another party arrives the owner immediately seats a group of people at that large table prior to all the others that had been already been waiting for at least 20-30 minutes. Wait? Thought there was no reservations? Two weeks ago there wasn’t. Needless to say, lost all respect and won’t be back in support of your West side business.
