Carvel — Restaurant in Town of Brookhaven

Horrific experience will never go back Okay so I’m not usually one to put things like this out there but this is just too extreme not to share what I experienced this morning. I am actually still very shaken up about it but on friday night my husband went to the Middle Island Carvel in the king kullen shopping center to purchase an ice cream cake for my daughter’s birthday party yesterday (sunday). He picked out the large, regular ice cream sheet cake out of the freezer (the normal vanilla and chocolate with crunches ice cream cake that we all purchased like a 1,000 times) and then checked out. Well yesterday when we went to serve the cake we noticed after cutting the cake and starting to serve it, that the bottom half was a chocolate peanut butter ice cream cake which we wouldn’t have known unless someone took a bite. We only wanted the regular ice cream cake we had been serving for years. unfortunately both my daughter and nephew have a peanut allergy. My nephew has a severe peanut allergy and will go into anaphylactic shock with the slightest taste of anything peanut in it. Nowhere on the box was it advertised that this cake contains any peanuts nor had peanut butter ice cream in it (clearly it was a mistake-someone must have made the cake and put it in the wrong box). It was placed in a normal carvel ice cream cake box. Luckily and thank the lord, the cake was not ingested by my daughter or nephew although we had to throw out the entire cake immediately as we didn’t want to risk anything. I had called the store to explain the situation and told them i would come in today to speak with a manager. Now this is where is gets interesting, i walked into the store this morning with a slice of cake and the box to show the manager that the wrong cake was put into this box. After explaining to the manager the situation she got very defensive and combative right off the bat and was nothing but rude to me. Yelling in my face, refusing a refund of any sort, she told me to go to hell and wished harm on me and this is the absolute kicker she told me

“ I am horrible mother for serving a peanut butter cake to my children”

and ultimately banned me from the store. I was in complete and utter shock. I was nothing but nice to both managers and explained everything in a calm manner. There was zero remorse from either managers for this honest mistake someone had made. I have never ever spoken to like that in my life and I have never felt demoralized in my life. I couldn’t believe my ears when she said that to another human being all because I was simply asking for a refund on a mistake they made. In the end, I finally got my refund and she literally threw the money at me and told me to get out. I have been going to this carvel for 11 years and never had this much disrespect from any business owner. I would have never bought the cake if i had known it contained chocolate peanut butter ice cream but there was no writing on the box saying so. Just putting this out as a Warning for others who may go there, some of these cakes may contain peanut butter ice cream in a normal box and you would never know it until is it too late. Horrible experience and i felt so degraded as a person from a mistake that they made that could have cost a child’s life. This is no way to conduct a business. Shame on Middle...

This review is based off of a purchase I made about 2 years ago, however, through a local community page other people have experienced the same thing and i think it is EXTREMELY important to put this somewhere I know the owner will see.

So, again about 2 years ago I bought an ice cream cake for a friends birthday. I walked in, i was helped immediately, i asked the guy (young late high school/college looking dude) if the cake i was holding was the regular standard chocolate/vanilla ice cream cake. He said yes. When it was time to eat the cake every single person confirmed there is peanut butter in this cake. I felt terrible and thanked whatever higher power there is that no one was allergic.

I debated many times going in and asking for a refund bc the flavor of peanut butter is so strong it basically punches you in the face. But i decided not to because no one got hurt at the end of the day, and mistakes happen.

However since being made aware that another person experienced this RECENTLY. I’m deciding to make this problem known.

I’m not sure if this carvel is maybe using the wrong flavors OR worse they aren’t properly cleaning their work stations or equipment. Again, I’m not sure, and don’t want to make assumptions as I have never worked in the food industry.

But this isn’t just a “oh the ice cream is made around peanuts” the flavor is so strong! And i have had ice cream from carvel since 1993 never gave i been able to taste the peanuts until i bought that cake…so there must be something weird going on.

Owner, if you read this please do your best to investigate, what’s going to happen eventually is a child going into...

The place is very clean and well lit. The ice cream is delicious as one would expect from Carvel. But unless one has 45 free minutes to get an ice cream cone I would suggest that one should drive to Shirley or Rocky Point. It would be quicker. It seems that there are usually two young people taking care of the store but only one is at the counter (the other is usually doing something in the back room). Because the store is rectangular in shape there is no place to line up, and customers simply spread themselves lengthwise along the counter. The poor young people simply say, “I’ll help whoever is next,” but that is uncertain since there is no line nor are there ticket numbers. It is much like eating in the High School Cafeteria what with the youth and inexperience of the staff. On my last two visits I simply left without having been served after waiting for 25 minutes. I drove to Shirley for a cone and with the six mile drive it was undoubtedly quicker than waiting in Middle Island. As one who is also in the service industry, my advice to management is simply that there should be an adult in the room. In the future I will simply drive to Shirley, Rocky Point , or Medford. It will be less...
