Okeno Sushi — Restaurant in Town of Brookhaven

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. I don't rate this five stars to say it's the best sushi I've ever eaten, but I rate it five stars to say as a sushi joint in a nondescript strip mall in Shirley, the quality was unexpectedly great.

The restaurant itself isn't anything to write home about. If you've eaten sushi at your local spot before, you've been here too. Not particularly large inside, no fancy decorations, dark brown wood and a bottle of Kikkoman on every table.

I got a salmon avocado roll (a classic standby in my mind) and a phoenix roll. I was genuinely shocked at how fresh the fish looked. Vibrant color and fatty ribbons throughout the salmon, and a delicate pink hue with pretty solid marbling on the yellowtail.

The flavors were great. Not a hint of overt fishiness, which unfortunately I often get when ordering yellowtail elsewhere. The crab, crunch, and avocado inside the Phoenix roll actually got a bit too much for me as my eyes were a bit bigger than my stomach, so I ended up just peeling the delicious yellow tail off the tops of the rolls toward the end.

Overall an incredibly satisfying lunch for a reasonable price. If I find myself hungry in the area again I'll know...

This is, hands down, the BEST sushi restaurant I have ever been to. I’ve gone to other more expensive places with fancy interiors and lights but none can compete with Okeno. Their Jade roll is to die for, the perfect balance of spicy raw fish, avocado, crunchy bits, and green onion. I’ve tried to find other places with rolls as delicious and well made as these, but no luck. Their service is wonderful, they always remember their regulars, even after years of being away in another state, they still remembered my name and my face! I plan to have them cater my wedding whenever that is, it is truly the best and honestly most affordable sushi for the elite quality! You have to try them if you haven’t! We used to love getting the bento boxes too when we’d have lunch dates. Super tasty, very friendly, and so fast! Love them! Oh! Also love their miso soup! Got me through some bad colds and flus! I go here every time I have the chance for lunch! I am so lucky to work 5 minutes away! Love the stuffed shrimp appetizer(if you like mustard and citrus it's even better! ) I love their snow crab asparagus rolls, their tea, their salmon bento box, their fried fish appetizer is bomb! Shrimp tempora rolls and meal are great too! You can find tons of cooked options if you don't like to eat raw fish! I don't think I have had anything I didn't like a lot or LOVE! Their sliced octopus was very good, their itchibang roll was so delicious! Everything is always fresh and the service is quick even at their peak times! Their staff is great too!
