I stopped on a perfect summer night and tried their food for the first time. The menu looks very inviting with the staples of hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken, all available in any different number of ways, there was also a specials board including Jalapeno poppers. Quite a diverse variety of simple tasty combinations. The Swiss Mushroom burger looked especially tempting, but since this was my first experience I opted for a plain hamburger, cooked to order- medium rare- with tomato slice, lettuce pickles on a soft bakery style bun. I also added plain fries and a hot dog with relish onions and sour kraut. The hamburger was perfect in everyway. A beautiful crust on the patty, juicy and tender. Fresh shredded lettuce and tomato, 3 large pickle slices. It was assembled with care and was a pleasure to eat, delicious. French fries were crinkle cut- possibly frozen- but cooked well, golden, hot and tender with just the right amount of oil. The hot dog was slit in half then grilled for extra flavor, served on a similar soft bakery style bun. It had just the right amount of bite with a good beef aroma. I really liked the sour kraut they added which was a mellow crisp young kraut not watery or too salty. I throughly enjoyed it as I devoured it in 4 or 5 bites. After enjoying my meal and relaxing in the clean inviting picnic table area I found room for ice cream. I had a simple unadorned soft serve chocolate cone. Cold, creamy with a good chocolate flavor, it capped off the meal with a satisfying sigh. All told I enjoyed a great meal for about $10 plus tip. I'm anxious to start sampling all the offerings on the extensive menu. I now understand the long lines on a hot summer night as well as the shorter lines on a freezing March evening. Joes Dairy Bar is a place to enjoy great food and ice cream treats with family friends...
Read moreWhile undeniably, this place is a neighborhood staple where more often than not, dozens of people wait on line to eat ice cream and burger fare,I have to say that I believe their popularity is actually a drawback to me personally, and I will explain why... During their peak times,it is EXTREMELY difficult to navigate the rather limited parking area.I have personally witnessed arguments and road rage type incidents from drivers attempting to pass people trying to enter and exit the lot.. Another negative aspect is if you are adverse to standing in a non weatherproof long line close to a busy roadway then you probably should only attempt going there when the lines are short(this is rare) Lastly,if there was a starred rating for price I would rate it a 1...While the ice cream and food are high quality products,it is awfully expensive for a roadside stand..I don't appreciate businesses who capitalize on their popularity by pricing what should be affordable food into the stratosphere.. I am aware that lifelong residents in this area consider this place a summer tradition, and while I appreciate and respect that sentiment,I personally cannot afford to take advantage of this experience on a regular basis, nor can I have the appropriate level of patience to deal with the parking and waiting portion of it..If the prices were lower and the setting a bit less stressful,I would be a regular...
Read moreRecent transplant to Dutchess County and I’ve driven by this place dozens of times while getting around town. Saw the place buzzing with customers each time and made a mental note to check it out soon. Doesn’t look like much but there’s a certain charm to it that sorta draws you in. Anyway, I finally went about a month ago while it was still chilly out and was immediately greeted by a friendly young lady at the window. Told her it was my first time there and that I was curious if there was anything particular that people came in for. She said people come for the burgers, so I ordered one with fries and asked for bacon on it as well. The burger did. not. miss. Grabbed my kids chicken tenders, fries and onion rings. The tenders looked like pretty standard fare but that burger brought me back for tonight’s dinner and it was still good, so I’m grateful for the consistency. Ice cream options were plentiful. I had the cookies and cream my first time out but today opted for the peanut butter s’mores topped with cake crunch because I was feeling a little dangerous. This is a really cool spot to just kick back on an early summer evening when it’s warm and the breeze is just right…🤌🏼 I’ll be coming back a bunch in the coming months. If you’re in the area and/or have been on the fence about...
