We arrived for lunch an hour before they closed. We were tourists...I picked Cala's for lunch based on the many positive reviews. Cala's is close (5 minutes) to Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff house, which we toured before heading over for lunch.
Typical roadside diner, as expected. We ordered the Ruben sandwiches. They were ok, but not remarkable. I ordered a blueberry pancake with bacon. Bacon was wafer thin. Pancake was ok, but like the Ruben, not remarkable. So, what was the hype?
The insult of our experience came when we asked for our check. We had our credit card ready to hand her as she brought the check. She didn't explain that they expected us to take it up to the counter...instead, she took it to the counter and rang us out...and added a 25%. The print out didn't show the 25% tip and the tip section was blank, so it took me a minute to figure out why my charge was so high. WOW. We are usually generous tippers of 20% standard. Higher for exceptional service/food. Cala's did not warrant a 25% tip. SO BEWARE: The locals take their bill to the counter.
Of course, we were only passing through, so they didn't lose a customer. but I wanted to warn other travelers...
Read moreWe used Cala’s On a recommendation from a friend for our sons graduation party, and we are SO glad we did. We used the “no muss no fuss” package for 70 people and we actually had more than that show, and STILL had a ton of leftovers! The chicken was juicy and hot, Italian sausages with peppers and onions where a huge hit! Our town has used a local guy for many years, but I can guarantee that’s going to change! Had 3 different people say they wish they could cancel their caterer and use these guys for their grad party ( you should advertise a little more in the Hamburg, Eden, North Collins area, you have a great business!)Professional, friendly and DEFINITELY accommodating! Vinny was who we dealt with, and will definitely use them again for catering, and will definitely be going to their restaurant. Great place to deal with and made our lives easier planning this ordeal, a big “Thank you” to them and the delivery guys.. professionally dressed when they showed up and...
Read moreWe had 10am reservations, never got seated until 10:40 after numerous party were seated before us that came after us as walk ins. Waited another 1 hour for the food after we ordered it. They were more worried about pushing the $20 buffet then our menu order. About half way into my wifes pancakes, she found an ant under her pancakes. No one wanted to finish eating (I wonder why) . Wait for it, they handed me a check. Only $8 off for the cost of the pancakes Thanks for the mother's day memory. All they said was the ant was in the syrup. I don't care where it was, you apologize and don't charge the customer. They ending up charging me $30 for our breakfast that no one ate. This place is a customer service nightmare. I went here instead of a chain restaurant to help a local business that was a huge mistake on my behalf. Needless to say we will never go back. Dine there at...
