I wanted to love my meal from here as this was our 2nd shot here after a poor experience years ago. We planned on eating at the Albatross on Washington Island, but it was closed. By the time we got back on the peninsula, many places were closed. For some reason, it took about 20 minutes to make a sandwich, even though there were only a couple of people in the restaurant and they already had their food. We were getting our food to go. By the time our food was ready (which felt like eons, especially when you're really hungry), we took off and headed a bit South to eat while watching the sun set. Before I even unwrapped my sandwich, I could tell I wouldn't be able to eat it. I asked for no onions, but my sandwich was loaded with red onions. Not only were there potent onions on my sandwich, but there was very little meat and items I actually wanted on my sandwich were omitted. Not only do I find fresh onions repulsive, but I also experience mouth discomfort when I've eaten them in the past, so I avoid them whenever possible. The bread seemed stale as well, so I'd consider it a pretty blah 'meal' all around, no where near its monetary value. I removed all of the bad parts of the sandwich and was left with very little. I then happily ate the carrots and pickle that came with my 'meal'. The carrots and pickle were good, but it's hard to mess those items up. My husband's sandwich was made as ordered, but also had stale bread and was on the flimsy side. We also got ice cream, which I would rate a 4/10. Pretty boring ice cream without much flavor. Though this restaurant/shop is adorable and clean, I would only visit again if I had no other options. We try not to eat at the same place more than 1 time each time we visit. I'm happy to have eliminated this restaurant completely on future visits as this was our second meh experience here. I have a hunch that the subs from the gas station in Sister Bay offers better sandwiches and ice cream than Door County Ice Cream Factory. It's such a bummer that this adorable stop doesn't serve up eats that are worth stepping into the really cool interior of the building for. Charm all over the place, except for the very reason you'd visit to begin with- food...

Long time favorite location for delicious sandwiches, but it was a disappointment today.
We ordered two King of The Hill sandwiches (10.95 with a bag of chips). Unfortunately they were more like bottom of the barrel today. The buns were hard and stale. I could not bite into the top bun at all and ended up just taking it off because it was inedible. There was plenty of good quality meats and cheeses on the sandwich. The problem — in addition to the stale bread — is the whole sandwich is much smaller than it used to be and there were barely any toppings. I had a tiny half slice of tomato end on each half of my sandwich, a few slivers of red onion and 1 lettuce leaf. I would have not used those tomato pieces on a sandwich I made at home let alone one I was making to sell.
My husband told me that while he was waiting for our sandwiches to be made a woman who was dining inside came back to the sandwich counter to request more lettuce for her sandwich. She remarked she had very little tomato and onion as well. So this was not an isolated incident today just for us.
The location is nice. The restaurant is clean and pretty with lovely decorations. The outdoor picnic area is idyllic. The new garage mural is adorable!
This has always been a “must” place to stop when in Door county but after today it will probably be a drive by. We were so disappointed we didn’t even get ice cream!
Update: Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the time and effort it took. It’s good to know it’s okay to ask for more toppings. I would have probably asked for a different bun (and better tomato slices) but we took carry out so it wasn’t possible — nor could we ask for more toppings.
You are implying the bread could not possibly have been stale. It was hard. I could not bite into it.
The previous time we were there the door county cherry ice cream had crystals as if it had thawed then refrozen. I should have complained at the time but we were already out the door. So not too excited about the ice cream...
