TL:DR - Ollie's is bringing awesome pizza, a beautiful gathering space, and socially responsible business to High Falls.
Opening at a time when the community, and the country, needs some comfort and care, this wood-fired pizzeria - sited in a tastefully renovated barn - provides plenty of socially distanced and beautiful outdoor space, delivers that comfort of awesome (and quick service) pizza paired with organic wines and tasty IPAs, and tops it off with the care of thoughtful owners and staff.
The grandma pie was gone as soon as it dropped onto our table - I am not usually in for a square pie, but the crust was beautifully baked, crispy on the bite and the perfect chew, topped with a perfectly balanced sauce (not too sweet, not too salty), and finished with just enough cheese. There was not one shining ingredient, the combination all good ingredients baked to perfection was just, as I have said, awesome.
My table of six also ordered a special white pie which came with topped with arugula and corn. I was hesitant - I'm not a fan of a white pie or corn on a pizza. But when I had a slice I was beyond impressed, again the back of the house succeeded in balancing flavors and creating a slice that was sooooo good.
And of course a we had a round Margarita that was just... You have to have it.
In the end of the day I didn't have a favorite pie because they were all so delicious.
We ordered a carafe of the house white, a Natural from Cali, which was what you want in a natural wine - easy to drink, different but not funky, and addition to the meal.
I asked the owners when they would open inside, eyeing the beautiful 360 degree bar, custom built booths, and antique lighting. They shared that their primary concern is the safety of customers and staff, and that they will be making decisions grounded in this concern as conditions shift with the pandemic. This is the type thoughtfulness we deserve from a local business. This commitment to their workers shows in the 3% covid service charge, which many restaurants are charging to cover the increased cost of masks and other forms of PPE for staff, BUT Ollie's is instead giving that surcharge direct to staff to support them in this time of reduced hours and more risk at work. (And of course Ollie's is also providing all needed PPE to staff).
If I'm honest, I always thought that pizza was pizza - what could go wrong, its bread cheese and sauce. What could be better. Then I went to Rome and realized there is a difference between good pizza and awesome pizza. Ollie's brings that level of awesome that is not often found in the states, without the cost of a flight and priced right for the quality and quantity of food, and the...
Read moreReally good pizza, nice airy dough. Everything tastes like good fresh ingredients! Had the grandma, margarita with pepperoni, and a summer salad (house salad with garden fresh ingredient). All were good... unfortunately not worth the money. Way over priced, zipcode is 12440 but priced as if it was 11231. Literally when I was waiting for my pickup, the people ahead of me were questioning how their bill for a pizza night out were so much more than what they were expecting. Also not sure what a 3% Covid surcharge is?! I dont think I was charged that, or if it was a joke? But a 3% Covid charge on the menu board. Seriously? (If it wasn't a joke).
Dont get me wrong, very good pizza comparable to when we had Grimaldi's up here. Definitely a step up, but not worth the premium. I truly do not mind paying for great food and/or experience. If you want to overpay for food but feel great doing it, try Hotel Kinsley in uptown Kingston. It'll be about $100 -200 a person but man your pallet will thank you.
I hope Ollie's survives up here. Just will not fit in at it's current offerings. It's like trying to wow us with farm fresh ingredients but with prices for people living in the city. Look around, we all have gardens and live farm fresh on the daily, it's just basic up here. Need something else for the...
Read moreVery disappointing experience. The girl outside who took our order came over to our table and told my wife she couldn't have her own drink (which she brought for dietary restriction reasons).. Ok, no big deal.. So my wife put the can back in her mini cooler and off to the side. Then the girl said she had to bring the drink back to our vehicle because "she would still drink it"..My wife said, 'ok but I really wouldn't drink it' (and she absolutely wouldn't if that's their rules).. Thought that was over, then she doubled down and said that my wife would still disobey and drink her own soda. The girl basically told my wife she was a liar. Btw, if you knew my wife you'd see she's the most agreeable, non-confrontational person you'll ever meet.. So it was even more bizarre that this person would suggest she's lying. Absolutely the worst way to treat a customer if you want them to come back.. Which we will not be doing. Customer service is important. The gluten free pizza itself was so bready.. it was basically like eating breadsticks with a little cheese and sauce which you couldn't taste much as they were overwhelmed by the breading. ...
