Thai Elephant 2; on route 22 in Pawling NY.
We have been eating here on and off over the years, but will not be returning in the future. This will be a critical review based on facts, not opinions.
Pros: 1.The restaurant is conveniently located on route 22. The view from the terrace is wonderful, you can watch the sunset while dinning.
Cons: The restaurant is rather dark inside. The overall appearance is dingy and dated. A renovation is in order. The food is OK to below average. More on that later. The service is OK to below average. Possible food poisoning.
Getting back to the food: I ordered Pad Thai with Tofu, a standard entre of a Thai restaurant. A meal I have enjoyed at a number of different restaurants over the years and knew what to expect. What I received was a plate of rice noodles in brown sauce with tofu. On the side were some been sprouts, as expected, and few mushy dark brown ground peanuts. Missing was the bell peppers, eggs, green onions and all the spices. This is supposed to be a spicy dish, it is written in red on the menu with a warning note about the spice level. There was nothing spicy about it. In fact, it had very little taste at all. Rice noodles and tofu in a generic brown sauce is not exactly packed with flavor. All those missing ingredients were the things that add texture and flavor the meal. Without them it was just a flavorless meal.
The other meals ordered by my family were more acceptable, but nothing special. Certainly not enough to offset the dud of a meal I was server. Honestly, I have made better Pad Tai from a box purchased at the supermarket.
Just to add insult, I spent the better part of the next morning in the rest room with digestive problems. Food poisoning? Probably; but I didn’t run any lab tests so can’t say with 100% certainty. There is strong evidence for a correlation even if a direct cause and effect cannot be clinically proven.
Tai Elephant 2 used to be a reasonable place to eat a few years back. But it has been going down hill for some time now. We are done with this place. Best of...
Read moreLunch special portions are not generous. First visit. They served our table huge round plates with a handful amount of food laying flat in the center.. When we got to around 5 rounds of servings to the mouth we each were already half-way done with the meal.. We thought maybe that's just how the lunch special is around here until we overheard the next large table full of men & women complaining to each other about the same thing. We love Thai food and are used to trying it out and getting it from many very good restaurants in the city and even out of state. We decided to try this place because of the reviews. This place comes nowhere near the Thai food experiences that we've had.. Authentic or not. The lunch Pad Se Ew barely had flat noodles and the meal wasn't properly mixed...the 4 pieces of noodles that were on the plate were not cut but extremely long and sat on one side... The other Half of the Pad Se Ew was fried eggs doused in soy sauce and that's exactly what it tasted like.. I kept searching for the rest of the noodles. The pad Thai was good.. Just very little portions.. one of my guests were jokingly asking where the rest of it was. And the Masaman Curry was fine according to my other guests... Just again, portion. They did not serve Pineapple Fried rice as part of the lunch special which was a first! We've had a lot more generous portions for a lunch special meal for the same prices at ritzy Thai restaurants with much better ratings. This restaurant forces you to pay regular price during the lunch hour special simply to get a decent sized meal. I was hosting friends from out of the country who never had tasted Thai food and was trying to encourage them to do so based on my consistent experiences in many other restaurants. Not all the food was terrible and the service was good But for stingy meals as if they are on a small budget and for the lack of quality food I prefer to take the many more friends visiting from out the country to other restaurants so that they may get a better first...
Read moreMy family and I ordered from here with Uber Eats after getting excited for Thai one Friday night, because we hadn’t had it in a while. We definitely should have picked elsewhere. We were quite disappointed with the quality and portions.
My wife and I were visiting her family in the area and ordered this hungry and on a whim. I can’t speak to the service or atmosphere, but the delivery driver waited quite a while for the food once he arrived (roughly 35 minutes). Everything looked appropriate with the order on arrival, but the Thai iced tea was nothing to brag about. It wasn’t awful, just not as good as I’ve usually had it many other places.
Both Pad Thai dishes (1-chicken; 1-shrimp) looked pretty underwhelming and a bit small on first inspection, few vegetables and they were a bit limp, chicken was abundant in my dish but it was a bit dry, and the peanut pieces (I think they were peanut pieces) looked a bit weird and just tossed in a clump on one side of the dish. Also, I’d asked for medium spice on mine and neither were the least bit spicy. Taste was disappointing as well didn’t taste like a normal Pad Thai peanut sauce and it wasn’t awful or inedible it just did not taste like good Pad Thai to me. A close friend is Thai and visits his family there often, he’s shown us some great Thai restaurants. I won’t claim to be an expert in Thai cuisine by any means, but I’m no novice either.
Overall, we will be finding our Thai fix elsewhere. I left an extra star because I will admit that the impersonal Uber delivery MAY have some effect towards our experience rather than dine-in, but I feel I’m being generous with that. Prior to leaving this I read a couple of food poisoning claims here which is concerning, I feel fine as of now, but I WILL be revising this if...
