Poppy's Ice Cream — Restaurant in Town of Rotterdam

Soooo delicious! The prices are great for what you get. One of our favorites now for sure. The owner is really nice too! Poppy’s has a new owner and pretty sure it’s run by the family.

Edit: this is long. TLDR: horrible experience with attitude. Normally it’s great. Ice cream is always good.

So initially, I gave 5 stars and most of my experiences have been 5 star, however my most recent experience was very frustrating, so I’m giving 4 stars at this time. Normally we stay and eat our ice cream outside or take it in the car and go for a ride while we eat it. This last time, I was out alone and bringing ice cream home instead. I SPECIFICALLY asked if I got ice cream and sundaes to go, if they had containers and lids for it. They said YES. When I received one of my sundaes, it was in the standard styrofoam bowl with another styrofoam bowl taped to the top... I thought it was weird, but figured it might be ok if that’s how they’ve been doing it. When I received the next sundae, it was in a plastic to go container and the donut was in a separate bag. O, that they had done that for the cone part of the other sundae… To try and condense the story: IT WAS NOT OK. I made it MAYBE 2 minutes down the road. Ice cream on the floor. On the seat. On the side of the road.

I called and told them what happened and asked if I came back if they could possibly make me a new one. They said it was fine, no problem. I got back a couple minutes later (after using all my napkins to try and clean up the disaster with little success) and had to wait in line again, and wait for it it be remade. BUT the absolute worst part was the woman’s attitude. I’m honestly not sure if she also is an owner or a worker? I almost always have gone when the guy who owns the place is there and he’s always been great. He’s gone above and beyond in the past to provide good customer service. This was a very different experience… I hate leaving negative reviews, but her attitude about the situation was pretty terrible… I was told it wasn’t really their fault, she clearly didn’t want to remake it, she was muttering under her breath and generally seemed annoyed. I, AS THE CUSTOMER SHOULD NOT BE MADE TO FEEL LIKE A JERK. It WAS your fault for not using the appropriate to-go containers. It was not my fault the thing exploded everywhere because you only gave me styrofoam bowls.

She gave in, I guess, though I didn’t really push. It was remade in the exact same way, so I held the thing in my hand all the way home. If this had been my only experience, I’d honestly probably never come back. Thankfully I know how good the ice cream is and how good the experience can be, I’m sure others going for the first time would have no idea and never want to come back. Please, please do better. Be consistent in customer service. Ice cream is one of our happy places. You have been our go to place. Good local favorite. Traditional flavor burst, slushie, and hard ice creams. Soft serve, dole vegan flavors and waffle cones! Goes above with ice cream sundaes, ice cream nachos, and an assortment of flavors. Picnic tables, gazebo and peaceful setting for a night of family memories, first dates or "me" time. Don't forget the shakes! My girl group and I love to sit and catch up, watch the sunset. Or watch the firemen across the street if that's your speed! Conveniently located in rotterdam (or south schenectady which is new to me). There's pizza next door, great one stop shop for parties. The staff is friendly and welcoming, they know what's good and in season. Dog friendly patio for those of us who love to dog watch or the dog parents who want a night out on the town. A well known establishment for us locals and inviting to those who are not. Poppys is here to stay! Thank you to everyone who has a hand in this late evening crowd favorite. Anything with peanut butter is my all time favorite. They have a peanut butter smores hard ice cream that is my go to but I try to sample a little bit of everything. Blueberry cheesecake...

We just sat in the parking lot of Poppy's Ice Cream way up by the road to watch for a person that was dropping us off water jugs and the Sunday paper so I didn't have to buy the water. This is right across from South Schenectady Fire Dept. Parking Lot they were having a basket sale on Sunday April 30th. My daughter got out of the car to smoke a cigarette and a guy from inside Poppy' walk out and came by her and said no smoking on the property. We were way up by the road facing out we could see the entrance where people were going into the sale at So. SCHENECTADY Fire Dept. There were no signs up to say no smoking and we were not by any people there . She would not smoke among people ever she always goes away from people unless others are smoking too. There was no cars or people around us and it was OUTSIDE. I SURE HOPE THE GUY THAT DID THIS FROM...
