First of all, this place is GORGEOUS. There's seating right on the edge of the water.
There's also a garage barn thing with games, there's a hand washing station, there's popcorn, and I guess there's also the fabulous food!
I didn't wind up getting a chance to check out the other lobster shacks, and I didn't feel like I missed out at all because Archie's served me so much wonderful food. I don't get to eat a lot of seafood like this, and nobody hesitated to answer my questions AND check back in to see how I was doing.
I really felt like they wanted me to enjoy my meal and time there! Everyone I talked to was just so sweet and kind to me. I felt really welcome here.
I got to try a lobster dinner, a lobster roll, a crab roll, clam chowder, and PIE!
And I loved all of it. Nothing was fishy, everything tasted fresh. It felt like having a nice sushi dinner with the care that goes into everything. I think that especially shined in the lobster dinner, but it was apparent in everything.
And yet, it's also casual, no expectations or demands on you to be a fancy diner. You can even bring your own drink and your dog. It's just really, really fresh seafood cooked with respect.
I only had time to try one lobster roll, and I got mayo. And I LOVED it. The mayo really brings out the sweetness of the lobster, and that pairs wonderfully with the toasted bun.
I heard blueberries are a big treat in Maine, so I didn't want to miss getting a slice of their pie. They recommended I try a la mode, and in the moment, I was ready to follow the staff off a cliff, so I absolutely took them up on that. And it was DIVINE. I tried other blueberry pies, and this one absolutely took first place for me. The blueberries are SO sweet and flavorful, the crust has that really comforting soft, flaky homemade flavor and texture, AND THE ICE CREAM. The ice cream is so smooth and creamy that it starts to get that melty gooey texture. They have signs about the ice cream at checkout, it's made with local cream, and they aren't overhyping it.
I definitely recommend you don't skimp on treating yourself to dessert here!
The only thing I regret about Archie's is that I didn't stay in Maine long enough to eat 10 lobster rolls with pie. And more chowder and crab rolls. And everything, actually.
Side note for the gluten free travelers: I absolutely had it on my mind coming back and bringing my husband with celiac's, so I asked about the gluten free buns. They told me a staff member has celiac's, and they had her pick the bun to make sure they were accommodating celiacs well. Their chowder is also gluten free and, yes,...
Read moreWe had high expectations coming here and they were blown out of the water. I wish I could pack this place in a bag and take it with me. Everything is fantastic from the food to the atmosphere to the service (special shout out to Casey!)
The story goes that this used to be a food truck but became a stand alone restaurant recently. The wife runs the restaurant and the husband brings in the fresh lobster catches everyday. We found out that right now (August) through about October is called “shedder” season when the lobsters shed their shell. So the meat is sweet and not as firm which makes it perfect for a lobster roll!
We ordered a few Archie’s Lobster bakes. They come with a lobster roll, fries, a blueberry pie with ice cream, clam chowder, and your choice of a blueberry soda or root beer. I highly suggest the blueberry soda, so good and way different than things we get in the Midwest. That costs $48 for all the above mentioned items.
You can also just buy your lobster rolls separately with either mayo, nothing, or butter where they also heat up the roll and meat. I suggest butter personally but I doubt you can go wrong. We ordered potato salad as a side and it’s nothing to write home about so skip it and just get the Archie bake if you want sides. Surprisingly, even though everything was amazing, the fries also stood out as really good! For 6 people, 4 boys we spent about $250. Also we were the order number of the day and won a free dessert (whoopie pie!) which is another very cool thing they do! Definitely recommend getting the blueberry pie with ice cream it was sooooo good especially when melted a bit. Lobster bisque was phenomenal and so creamy. Clam chowder was hearty and toothy not mushy which was nice. Lobster was sweet and cooked to perfection.
Then you get a number and can choose from Bay side seating with a view of the water to tables in their shed if it’s not so nice out. Seating is super plentiful, we went around 2;30 on a Monday and had no issue finding seats. The restaurant is BYOB and dog friendly. They are closed only on Wednesdays.
You finish out your meal by dropping your trays and trash at any of the stations they have around the seating area. You can also wash your hands there and put your lobster crackers back. Overall, we will absolutely be back even though we are only here for a few more days! You just can’t beat this family owned, local,...
Read moreThe best fresh lobster meal we had since arriving in Bar Harbor. We were on a 4 day trip to Acadia National Park and we mostly have been eating at Bar Harbor restaurants (The Stadium, Paddys Pub, Side Street Cafe, Stewman's, ect) and as expected most of the food was overpriced and somewhat hastily prepared for mass consumption. We decided to venture out on our last day (Bass Harbor Lighthouse) and happened upon this place and based on previous reviews we decided to try them out. The lobster was very sweet and fresh, apparently this family owned business only serve what they catch so expect the lobster to be fresh as it can be. The lobster roll was very generous and the bread was soft and sweet, the best we had (we tried a lot in Bar Harbor), although against my wife's wishes I did try the Lobster grilled cheese and it was excellent as well (no pics since it was the first to arrive and was consumed before I could get my camera out). The clam chowder although not as thick as we were used to was also very good. The potato salad needs work. The price was the best part, expect to pay half price compared to bar harbor prices for a much better fresher meal. 27$ for lobster meal 1 1/4 pound, very sweet corn, potato salad. Well worth the 30 min drive...
