I absolutely LOVE Prep and Pastry! I've been to their Grant location a few times, but this was my first visit to this one on Campbell. I love this location even more!!
I thought this location had a much more spacious set-up that I really enjoyed. The one on Grant is lovely but also a bit cramped in its corner spot. This standalone location here is very spacious inside and has large patio areas as well! It was raining when we ate there, however, so everyone was inside. It was very crowded and bustling on the Sunday afternoon that we went but we still got seated very quickly. The atmosphere is kind of like a modern farmhouse in its aesthetic - high ceilings and large windows with mostly white walls. It was clean and simple while also having a slightly rustic feel, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was loud and echoey inside, but I appreciated the vibrant atmosphere.
The service continued to be very quick and we got our order taken with minimal delay. It occasionally would take some time to flag down the waiter afterwards if we needed anything else, but he was always very accommodating and quick to bring out anything.
The food and drinks themselves were excellent, as usual. I decided to get my favorite, the biscuits and gravy with two over easy eggs (an extra $2.50 for eggs, $6 extra if you want a fried chicken as well). It was even better than I had remembered from the last time I got it! The gravy sauce was slathered all over the biscuits and was very rich and creamy. It went perfectly with the eggs on top of it, the yolk mixing with the gravy sauce and creating a delicious bath for the biscuits to soak up when taking a bite! There are also plenty of vegetarian/vegan options if you're looking for that, particularly the chickpea scramble or the breakfast bowl.
I also loved both of the drinks I ordered - the serial celebrations cocktail for $11, which had some espresso liqueur and coco puffs on the top of it. Very chocolate-y but also quite strong! I also went ahead and finished off my brunch with one of the butterfly mimosas, which has lavender and lemon in it. An interesting drink before that is difficult to describe, but enjoyable nonetheless. I'd recommend giving it a try and deciding for yourself if you like the taste! Personally, I thought it was unique and tasty!
Another win for Prep and Pastry in my books! I love this location, the vibe, and of course the food and drinks. I think it's one of the best breakfast/brunch spots to go to in Tucson and I definitely recommend trying it if you...
Read moreMy girlfriend ordered “Prep’s Relleno", which is purported to be a stuffed poblano. Turned out to be an empty poblano, no cheese stuffing, no stuffing of any sort, no breading, not deep-fried, covered in scrambled eggs… not exactly a relleno. Maybe they should rename it “Prep’s Poblano”. She wasn’t too thrilled with it, rating it 2 stars.
I was in the mood for French Toast until I looked at the menu and the “Cast Iron Duck Confit” caught my eye. I asked our server if it would be possible to have the eggs sunny-up rather than over-easy and was told “certainly". Alas, the eggs were served over-easy. Nonetheless, the dish was delicious and worthy of 4 stars.
Their coffee tasted like it was made with one of those old “Yuban” industrial pre-measured baggies you put in a drip maker that renders a peculiar chemical taste of old PE sock-water flavors. They might want to revisit that! When our server asked it I wanted a refill, it was with reluctance I answered “sure, why not…” I probably didn’t finish it. Only 1-star for the coffee.
We sat outside on their covered patio, which is dog-friendly; the patio faces Campbell, which can be a trifle noisy with traffic. Atmosphere on the patio felt like a mediocre 3-star.
They were doing brisk business and the parking was near full, but a car was pulling out just as we were pulling in. Wait time for the patio was announced 5-10 minutes; our wait was just under five. They ask for a phone number for the wait list and text you when your table is ready.
Prices were in-line with other restaurants of this class. But!… Prep is yet another establishment that decides to pass on their credit card fees to you, the consumer… and it would appear they tax you on your kind offer to pay their credit card fees, as the tax line appears below the fees total. Nice. Just keep those fees in mind as you await your “generous rewards points” from your credit card.
At best a low-end 3-star experience that with a few tweaks could be easily improved: 1) Do something about that awful coffee; 2) Stop asking your customers to pay your credit card fees; 3) Assure your back end staff do a better job at presentation: my eggs should have been sunny side up; my girlfriend’s chili relleno should have been stuffed as per the description...
Read moreJust came back from lunch at this place. This is our second time dining in Prep & Pastry, and we've joined their mailing list a while back, but, except for some occasional promotional emails, never got a single offer, even though they claimed they have specials for birthdays and such. We were in the area and decided to go to this location for lunch, even though we didn't enjoy it the first time either, because of bad service and steep prices, but this time it was convenient because we were right in the area. They were open until 3pm and even though we arrived at 1:45 the only pastry they had behind the glass at the kitchen counter were a few scones (only one was still on top of the cake stand, the other two were knocked off and just laying flat on the dirty counter) and two apple pastries. I asked how much they were, waitress replied "$5.30", but when I asked our waiter again he said "no, they are $6". My husband ordered shakshuka (turned out to be not as nearly as good as the one we make at home), I ordered duck with potatoes (very little of the duck, mostly potatoes, small serving too). My husband's dish included a small thin piece of sourdough, he asked our waiter (who, although cordial, didn't look too happy to be serving us) for some more sourdough and about 5-7 min later the waiter finally brought 1.50 thin piece of the bread (for which we received an extra charge later, which said it included jam, which of course wasn't there). Tables and chairs were dirty (outside), overall atmosphere wasn't too welcoming, everything looked kind of sad...We should've stuck with our original plan to go to First Watch, where we always have offers, specials and discounts, not to mention a much better and less pretentious atmosphere and certainly better (and cheaper) food. Will not be coming back and I advise you not to. (BTW, they don't care about bad reviews, because there is not a single response from them on...
