Penny’s Cafe & Grill — Restaurant in Ukiah

Everything was closed in Ukiah including the ONE gas pump. The cafe sign read "open", but it was also closed. Asked local where to eat and he pointed to the Penny's food trailer. Half dozen people sitting on picnic tables in shade had the same idea. Owner/operator was extremely busy but very friendly. Most would get overwhelmed (I'd freak and be very short with everyone in a frantic scene like this) being the only source of grub in this near-ghosttown, but the chef/owner was honest and said "it could be a wait." We had no where to be. Sodas are $2. Big bottled water is $1 each. My friend's $11-ish mini taco basket was forgettable. Probably came out of a Costco bag. But my chuckwagon burger was a homerun! Pile of fries, sauce, and a great price considering you have no options in the middle of nowhere. My other friend's chicken nugget basket came with bread, and was a pretty good meal. Get the chuckwagon sandwich! The menu is pretty big, there is recycling. If we're ever in Ukiah we'll remember to seek Penny's (and make sure the gas tank is 100% full before heading into town). We loved eating lunch here!! The customer service was great, the man there seemed genuinely happy that we were there. Him alone made us so glad we picked Penny's to eat at.... Then we got our food. And oh my gosh!! It was SO good. I got the grilled cheese and it was so good. The bread was seasoned so incredibly. The fries were perfect. My daughter really enjoyed her chicken strips. The mozzarella sticks were so melty. There are park benches that you can sit and eat at, and a park near by too. There's a bathroom nearby. You should...

Great little food cart. I believe it's the only dining establishment for many miles around. Makes it best in the area by default. But it's actually quite nice. We liked our food, the selection of the sauces for fries was impressive. I loved the tartar one. They did charge extra for more sauce (I needed 3 times as much) but that's fair.

On a good weather day the place is great to eat...
