We drove over from Bucyrus for Chinese. The other place is remodeling their dining room, so we went to Great Dragon.
Over a decade ago I'd been here. I'm glad we stopped in! I don't feel like we missed out, at all!
We placed our orders: kung po beef for my husband, kung po chicken for myself, and a small order of roast pork lo mein. Both kung po orders were dinners, and came with vegetable fried rice and an egg roll. With two pops the total came to around $33. Not bad.
We were there at peak time, and the phone was ringing constantly. I expected to wait 20 - 30 minutes. I was shocked when our food came out, piping hot, after ten minutes!
Let's get into the food. The brown sauce on the kung po was surprisingly vinegar-forward. It was tangy and slightly malty, with a pleasant kick. For me it had the right amount of heat, and with the tender chicken and crisp fresh veggies, it married the rice perfectly. The beef kung po was similarly excellent, with the addition of mushrooms. I was jealous. 🙂
Now the egg rolls. I am an egg roll snob, maybe even an egg roll connoisseur. I have searched high and low for that certain egg roll flavor I crave when I think "egg roll." I'm pleased to say I've found it at Great Dragon. The won ton wrapper was delightfully crispy. The cabbage was tender and juicy. My only quibble was that the first bite was a touch on the greasy side. It might be the brand of shortening they use? Again, it was the first bite. After that bite, I wished I'd ordered three, and I debated taking some home! 🤣
I almost forgot the pork lo mein! 🙂 That kiss of the wok, the elusive, magical flavor you can't get from any other cooking device. I love it. My first bite of the Great Dragon's roast pork lo mein was perfect. This is what pork lo mein should be. It was rich, very porky, and had just the right amount of perfectly-cut vegetables. I highly recommend it!
Now comes the reason for dinging a star beside atmosphere. The remodel is great. There's plenty of seating. I don't mind putting my own trash in the waste basket. The problem is, when we sat down, although the table had clearly been wiped, it had a sticky residue on it, everywhere. The restaurant is visually clean, and very appealing. We could have sat at another table. We could have called the wonderful, friendly lady over to wash it. We shouldn't have to.
It's a minor detail, but it's also a minor fix, needing only a bucket of hot water, a bit of antibacterial/antiviral cleanser, and a fresh sponge. Do a solid wipe-down before opening, a quick wipe-down after each guest clears their table, and a quick wipe-down of every table and chairs cushion at closing. Change the solution in the bucket every two hours. Easy peasy.
All in all, great experience! We will be back, for amazing kung po, egg rolls, and I have to try...
Read moreI usually love their food! Every time I've ordered I've been happy with their food and service. But I tried to order food on Saturday (5/30) and the girl that answered the phone kept talking me out of what I wanted to order. I tried to order a QT of Sweet and Sour Chicken and she told me, "No that it would be better if I ordered the meal instead." I told her I don't like the meal. She replied, " You don't like egg roll and fried rice?" I told her, no I don't and she told me I was weird. Then I tried to order a QT of Honey Chicken and once again she told me no. That I could only get it in a meal. I know this is wrong because I've ordered a QT of Honey chicken very many times from this place and have never had a problem before. Lastly I tried to order the House Special Fried rice and she once again told me, "No you no want that, you want chicken or pork fried rice." Finally she ticked me off enough that I hung up and drove all the way to Findlay to get Panda Express instead. I will not order from this restaurant again until they get a new front room person. It was a youngish girl that I talked to and I didn't appreciate being told NO over...
