Please note as of 2020, the Steer Barn has changed owners and the name is now Boone's Steer Barn.
We were a group of 6 who asked for a side room as we were going to be a long time socializing and playing dominoes as a family.
First off, our server was TOP NOTCH. She was friendly, accommodating, and attentive. We didn't want for anything. We can be a large group with questions and needs and she answered and met every one with a smile.
There is a full bar that has nice variety, including local wine and beer selections. The local beer is quite good and worth a try if you like local crafts.
You will get a bread basket with soft bread and butter and crispy garlic toast. The garlic toast is delicious! We asked for another basket because we couldn't stop nibbling on the garlicky, buttery goodness.
Next comes the trio of relishes. Selections include peas and peanuts, cottage cheese, carrot salad, potato salad, broccoli salad, and more. We had two with 6 different selections since we had a large party. All choices were fresh and tasty.
Many dinners come with a side salad, which was a nice selection of crisp, fresh greens. It wasn't swimming in dressing, which was nice.
Let's discuss my main course. I had the coulotte steak. I'm a steak eater and I was surrounded by steak eaters. I've had steak in some pretty fancy places and paid a good amount for incredible steak. Not even the most expensive steak on the menu, I can tell you this steak was one of the single best steaks I've ever had. It is local beef. They truly live up to the name "Steer Barn". My medium was cooked to absolute perfection. It was seasoned perfectly to compliment yet not overpower the flavor of the beef. The sweet potato was hot, fresh, and delicious.
As if all that food wasn't enough, we shared peanut butter cake and German chocolate cake; both rich and delicious.
Two of us, more food than we should eat, 3 beers, and high quality food with large portions. Our bill was less than $50. Well worth the quality, service, and experience.

Read moreWhat a nice surprise! My husband and I were traveling through Ohio and stopped at a Quality Inn off the interstate. We were looking for meat. After over a week on vacation, we wanted simple, tasty protein and fresh vegetables. Oh, and a nice cocktail. The Steer Barn restaurant is set in a red barn with a large pond and easy parking. Reservations were not needed for the two of us on a Saturday night at 7:30, but I would suggest calling if one had a large party or a special occasion. The setting is very rustic, as expected. Cocktails were good and reasonably priced, with a decent wine list. The menu had a selection of appetizers (including a huge shrimp cocktail), salads, prime rib, grilled steaks, chops and fish with excellent daily specials. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. She explained the "relish tray" which was your choice of cottage cheese, potato salad, olives and other tidbits along with breads as a very large starter that came with dinner entrés. In our case, we decided to order separate appetizers next time. My husband ordered a plate of babyback ribs and I has a small ( really large!)thick sirloin. My steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and the ribs looked tender and saucey. We both had seasonal vegetables as our side. The food was amazing!! Prices were a bit more than chain steakhouses like Outback or Lonestar, but definitely worth it! We noticed other diner's desserts which looked great, but we were full. As an aside, I suffer from migraines several times each month with a major trigger being strong odors from grilling ( I can only eat takeaway from Outback steakhouse) and the Steer Barn had enough ventilation for me to be comfortable. My only issue was the lack of cleanliness in the ladies room and the carpeting was old and soiled in some...
Read moreI wanted badly to give this place five stars. The meal was tasty except for a few points.
Fridays and Saturdays they serve New England Clam Chowder. The chowder is en pointe, full of flavor, clams, and potatoes, rich and creamy. The relishes that come with the meal are delicious. The fresh pea and peanut relish is mildly spicy. The cottage cheese is packed with herbs, a mild treat. The potato salad is a mustard salad, nicely done.
The house made French dressing is great, by the way.
The bread and toast sampler that comes with the relish selection could use more fresh elements. Two slices of bread, two pieces of dry whole wheat toast, and two pieces of deep fried toast are served in a small basket.
Now comes the nit picky part. We were served beautiful pieces of meat, perfectly cooked, the Delmonico steak and the prime rib. The mushrooms and baked potatoes were the let downs, and didn't belong on the plates. The mushrooms were nothing but stems, woody and dry. They didn't ruin the meat, but they were useless. Disappointing. The baked potato might have been pressure steamed. It never saw the inside of an oven. The tiny chips of butter and the teaspoon of sour cream did little to change the flavor of the well-laundered spud. The potato and the mushrooms did not belong in the same building as the rest of the meal, much less on the same plate.
For the price, they could do better. Service was exemplary, and we tipped well. The Steer Barn just needs to pay attention to details.
EDIT: After eating at another restaurant in town, this place loses a star. For the money, go to the other place (check my reviews) and enjoy their special menu. Their service is comparable, and their food is not compromised by poor execution of...
