The place looked beautiful, but the service was not good and the food was just ok.

We had to ask to have the calamari taken off our bill because the food we got was really over cooked and couldn’t even be chewed. Sure, they are meant to be chewy but not like beef jerky. The desert also had a freezer burn taste to it. We ordered a couple more things, they where ok not great. If you eat here just throw their queso all over your food, it helps.

We got checked on one time, and it wasn’t busy at all. Maybe one or two other people there. I felt very uncomfortable when it came time to pay. I had one of the lady’s who worked there stand and stare at me for 5+ mins while we waited to pay.

I didn’t realize we bring the bill to the front and pay, the register is covered up by candy jars so it wasn’t noticeable unless you had been there before and know the place. No one was standing at the register either, so that made it even more unnoticeable.

Would love for them to let me know I needed to pay elsewhere rather than stare at me until a manager went out of his was to take my card since my server still never came back.

Pretty much only had the essence...

Service was mediocre. They did ask if we wanted more chips when the first bowl was getting low then cleared the first bowl before it was empty when bringing the second. That was the theme all night. They tried but missed mark. We had to ask for more salsa then they tried taking the originals before they were empty. Cleared our plates before we were done eating and the last and final straw was when they cleared the fajita pan before we were done eating with food on it. The $2.25 jalapenos toreados were the worst we'd ever had...small and overcooked. Portions weren't large for the price. Flour tortillas broke easily. I asked for corn, got flour. Their regular salsa was pretty good, reminded me of El Mariachi on Merle Hay. We got the seafood fajitas which were missing the scallops and cheese described in the menu. Drove all the way here to have cheese sauce fajitas and it didn't even come as promised. I don't know if $3 Mexican beers are every Friday night or not but that was nice. Didn't have to ask for the nice frosty glass that came with it. Nice touch. Probably won't be back, at least not high on the fajita tour of des moines. Nacho tequilas...

I tried this place simply because we wanted Mexican food and it was near by. We were seated promptly. I got horchata and later a margarita. The horchata was great as horchata always is. The margarita was alright. More tequila than expected but thats a good thing in my book. The food came in around 10-15 minutes which is very reasonable. It was pretty good definitely not "overpriced taco bell" like someone reviewed it as. We got 2 meals that filled us up and 2 alcohol beverages and 2 regular drinks for under $50 which is pretty typical in price for most places. The restaurant is small but well kept. Very clean. Which shows they take pride in what they do and that can be hard to come by in places in this price range. I dont normally leave long reviews but after seeing the hate this place got i had to let them know that they are doing excellent and to keep it up. F*ck the people who gave you guys bad reviews.I will return...

My new favorite mexican restaurant! It looks kinda low-end and is in a strip mall, but I'm glad we still went with the other reviewers. I got 3 tacos with different meats, and all were phenomenal (El Diablo, housemade chorizo, and carnitas). My partner had 4 different enchiladas, which her opinions varied from 4 to 5 stars. Portions were huge with the rice and beans coming on a separate plate. Refried beans usually have little flavor, but these were amazing! I also asked for some sliced avocado and they brought out nearly a whole avocado and didn't charge (not sure if that was a mistake or it's normally free) Dessert was also amazing. Chimi Cheese Cake, which was a cheesecake filling inside a large fried churro with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Prices were very reasonable, $9.99 per huge entree, $3.99 for dessert large enough to share.

This is our 3rd time to eat at Cancun Grill and Catina. Great place and incredible weekly/daily specials. They have a generous lunch menu and the food all comes out hot and fresh. We ordered meals at about 2:00 pm, not a busy time during the week. Had their $2.99 Wednesday house margarita special and great meals. Highly recommend the tamales. We both ordered one as a side and it was good!! Their guacamole has got to be the best from anywhere local. They can get very busy but seem to handle the crowd well, we always feel well taken care of. Our meal with tip and drinks was less than $50.00, so a pretty good deal when you see your table top full of food.
