Tried this out on a date night with the wife. We were seated quickly and the restaurant didn't seem overly busy, just a few other groups. After we were seated we began looking at the menu and were brought chips, salsa, and a small container of mystery dip. The chips were fairly standard tortilla chips, and the salsa wasn't anything particularly special. The mystery dip tasted something like ranch dressing but neither of us were quite sure. The waiter asked us if we wanted drinks right away as we were still flipping to find the drinks on the menu. We found them eventually and my wife ordered a blended margarita while I ordered mine on the rocks and a few waters. We waited a few minutes and out came two on the rocks margaritas. I managed to catch the waiter as he went to walk away and got my wife's order corrected. The margaritas were both good and the size options mean you can have as much or as little as you want. We placed our food order. We asked for an order of chips and guacamole to start, and then both ordered the Vegetarian Burrito. A small amount of time later out came out burritos but our additional chips and guac were nowhere to be seen. The burritos were excellent. The filling was essentially fajita vegetables, hot and with a bit of crisp to them still. The burrito had a nice cheese sauce on top. The sides of rice and beans were good and complimentary to the burrito itself. We both finished and waited a bit until I was able to flag down our waiter who brought our check. I mentioned that we hadn't gotten the guac and they took it off. Overall, the food was really good and the service could use a bit of work. We'll likely give it another try sometime and maybe even ask what the...
Read moreVery poor experience tonight. Our usual takeout Mexican spot closed early for NYE, so we thought we’d give Don Maguey another shot after a couple years since our last time here.
Firstly, apparently all of their card machines suddenly stopped working in the time between I called to place the order and went to pick it up. Okay, no problem, as it was out of their control. Had to go to the ATM at Kwik Trip to get cash and go back. An inconvenience to be sure, but I honestly wasn’t annoyed hardly at all because the workers were very kind and apologetic about the issue with their machines.
Now, on to the food. My partner and I each did a pick 3 combination. The ground beef in her burrito was severely undercooked (see picture). Ground beef shouldn’t be that pink. The burritos were really more like enchiladas than burritos, as they were covered in red sauce and quite loose (not folded tightly), and not able to be eaten by hand. The pulled chicken tasted fine.
The “quesadillas” were so oily that they were legitimately soggy (see the glistening in the below picture). It’s like they weren’t grilled or pressed at all, and were just one tortilla loosely folded over.
My partner’s soft taco was also super wet. The rice that came with the meals was obviously frozen and not fresh, with random bits of corn, cubed carrots and grayish peas.
Overall, just incredibly disappointing food. We ended up getting delivery Taco Bell and were much more satisfied with that.
I like to support CG businesses when I can, but this experience unfortunately reminded me why going to East Madison or Sun Prairie for decent Mexican food is...
Read moreIf sub-Mediocre Mexican food was Mount Olympus, Don Magueys would be Zeus. Never before, in my history of consuming Mexican cuisine, have I tasted the ineptitude that I have on multiple occasions (3) at Don Magueys. Every 6 months or so, I’d lie to myself and say “There’s no way a restaurant, still in operation could continue to be that bad.” but Don Magueys pulls it off. Here’s been my experience. The place looks nice so your expectations rise as soon as you walk in. The bar is also very nice. I recommend drinking heavily because what’s to come will not be enjoyed sober. They start you off with a basket of their very own chips and salsa. Nice. If you have long waited to experience what it’s like to dip stale unsalted chips into a can of diced tomatoes, then you are in luck. After that treat, you can basically order anything on the menu and it doesn’t really matter because all the options are just masquerading as one dish. Plate of Bland. Name the way you like your Bland and Don Maguey will serve it up. ALSO. Soggy. I recommend the bland soggy enchiladas or the bland soggy fajitas. My kids love the bland and soggy quesadillas. I know this is the internet so people over state their reviews but I’m seriously not. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and try it for yourself. I tried to warn you. The people of Cottage Grove deserve a better...
