I wish I had a picture to share of my experience here but the food was so good, I didn't even think to stop and take one. Happy Cinco de Mayo ~ Mexican Grill is the perfect stop for a non-fast food break during a road trip. Right off of I-81, it will get overseen by the typical fast food options but this restaurant is truly worth the time of stopping for a sit down meal. The decor of the place is very interesting from the real interior brick roof tiles to the paintings of them around the sides of the restaurant that cannot support the authenticity. Each booth has unique paintings of various aspects of Mexican (excuse if it's more broadly Latin) culture and while it may seem like too much, it is actually the perfect amount to give the feel of being in a Mexican setting. Our server was more than delightful and even had conversations with us about topics outside of the restaurant. They knew perfectly when their input was welcomed and when to leave us to enjoy our food. Speaking of the food, I haven't had a lightly, fresh, crisp tasting chimichanga like the one at Happy Cinco de Mayo in almost a decade. I had one beef and one chicken and wish I could have had one of all options! The beans and rice were nicely cooked and seasoned and the cheese on top was a perfect ratio for the meal. My partner had a vegetarian chalupa and it was equally as delicious when I snuck a bite. I can say you probably can't go wrong with any choice that you make and the restaurant is well deserving of patrons. If you ever get hungry and you're passing by their exit on I-81, DO spend the extra 30 minutes and visit this place; I...
Read moreI thought this place was good and this was my first time ever, taking pics of a restaurant's menu to help out in providing an updated menu since those uploaded were old. Sadly, it was a terrible experience. Visited at night, place wasn't too busy with 2 waitresses. Blonde waitress seated us and took our orders. Order came and one of them was tortilla soup (taste wise it's a lil bland but add the lime and hot sauce and it's pretty good) but I was not given a spoon. 20 mins later.... seems like blonde waitress disappeared, so I had to flag the other mexican waitress to bring me one (and all our refills) as she was the only one actively serving the table next to us. Blonde girl came back to apologize that she was busy in the kitchen but disappeared again. This time, I noticed she was standing by a table and chatting with a male "lonely" customer for 15-20 mins. Mexican waitress was flagged down again to bring the check and they came back without a pen. We took a picture of the check to make sure they're not gonna add extra tips and left without tipping. Hope the blonde waitress enjoy cooking the "big fat egg(zero tip)" in her kitchen. Would've given 2 stars but the service doesn't deserve any star, the food was not too bad. With that many good reviews, it's prolly a hit or miss. Try at...
Read moreI drive from Canada to Myrtle Beach every October for a week long golf tourney with 3 or 4 friends. I travel a lot for business and have lots of Hilton points so, I spring for rooms at Hampton Inn each year.
3 years ago we found the Happy Cinco de Mayo Mexican Grill by accident. We usually try to find Southern BBQ places to eat on our overnight stay. We had a place picked out in Max Meadows - Ft Chiswell but, when we arrived on Friday at 6pm the place had a sign that it closes at 5pm on Fridays!!
Dejected we decided to go back to hotel and order pizza. I pulled into the wrong parking lot and ended up in a strip mall beside hotel and that's when we discovered now legendary Happy Cinco de Mayo Mexican Grill!! We have been coming back ever since.
We all live in Toronto area and we have all travelled quite a bit. The Mexican food here is as good or better than any I have ever eaten. It's a small family run place and the décor is simple but effective. We stick mostly to the Burritos, Enchiladas, Chimichangas and, of course, XX Beer on Draft served in chilled mugs.
I highly recommend this restaurant and can't wait for this October and another great meal at The Happy Cinco de Mayo...
