A Fusion Feast at Thai Won On: Where Thai Spice Meets British Charm and for an Englishman that's a blessing!
Nestled in a strip mall in the heart of Short Pump, Richmond, Thai Won On offers a culinary journey that bridges the gap between two distinct and delightful cuisines: Thai and British. This charming eatery almost an English Cafe, owned by a lovely Southern Englishman with an infectious sense of humor, has quickly become a local favorite, and itâs easy to see why.
Ambiance: As you step inside Thai Won On, you're welcomed by a simple and inviting atmosphere that combines traditional Thai aesthetics with a touch of British warmth and humor. The blend of Thai-inspired artwork and quintessential British decor creates a unique and appealing ambiance, making it the perfect setting for a diverse clientele, especially me, your favourite English RealtorÂŽ!
Culinary Fusion: The menu at Thai Won On is a testament to the creative fusion of Thai and British flavors. A standout dish, the Fish and Chips, brilliantly replicates the crispy perfection of British fish and chips. The fish is delicate, flaky, and encased in a light, golden batter, creating a satisfying crunch with every bite. Accompanied by perfectly seasoned chips, this dish is a harmonious marriage of textures and tastes. The owners wife is the chef and she's from Thailand so you know the Pad Thai and all the other Thai dishes are authentic.
Another star on the menu is the Sausage and Chips, a British classic with a twist. The pork sausages are expertly prepared, succulent, and bursting with flavor, complemented by a generous serving of perfectly cooked chips,(fries to you guys). The combination of the hearty sausages and the crispy chips makes for a comforting and hearty meal that is sure to leave you craving for more.
The Owner's Charm: What sets Thai Won On apart, besides its delectable cuisine, is the owner's delightful personality. The Southern Englishman at the helm brings not just his culinary expertise but also a great sense of humor and charm to the dining experience. His warm hospitality adds a personal touch, making every visit to Thai Won On feel like a gathering at a friend's place.

Read moreBest Food in Short Pump! We had intended to visit a different restaurant, but thankfully they were closed today and we went to Thai Won On instead! My husband was standing outside saying, "It's not Chinese..." I replied, "It doesn't have to be." And we are so glad it wasn't!
The food is fantastic - no need for salt, definitely no need for soy sauce! I got the #10 Fried Rice with the optional chicken. I usually order things with "no onion", but this time, I thought I'd give it a go. The onions were sweet and tasty, not pungent, and not overpowering in any way. The other vegetables were cut just the right size, and the chicken was sliced to perfection. The portions were huge, enough to take leftovers home.
I can't have gluten and the owner took the time to explain the menu and how everything, except for one soup, is gluten-free. They even have two kinds of gluten-free beer! (I'll be trying that on a future visit.) He said everything is cooked to order, so you can decide what you want. They do vegetarian, vegan, and have tofu or shrimp for the other proteins besides chicken.
We had desserts, the names of which I can't remember. One had a special sticky rice that only grows in Thailand topped with mango and a light creamy sauce - SO delicious!! I've never liked the taste of mango I've had in the past, but this was incredible and I'll be ordering it again!
The owners were awesome (they are in the photo) - the wife is the cook, although she deserves a much better title that I can't think of. The husband takes care of the customers and does a fantastic job of it - very personable and attentive! The atmosphere is beautiful: clean and bright, yet cozy at the same time. It's a small space, but they did a great job with designing the layout - plenty of seating and didn't feel crowded at all.
This is our new favorite restaurant! I highly recommend Thai Won On!! (Such a...
Read moreI was excited to try this place as they had a lot of gluten free options.
We ordered chicken Pad Thai and shrimp Pad See Ew. We spent 42$ for both dishes.
Pad Thai is among the most well known and eaten Thai staples. This one, not so much. The flavors werenât there. It was quite bland and the flavor that it did have was reminiscent of barbecue sauce. The noodles were dry, there were no green onions and the lime we were given was dry as well. I definitely wonât order it again.
The Pad See Ew was closer to the flavor that it should have been, although still very bland. The texture of the noodles and cabbage was accurate. I had to order the entree with shrimp instead of beef because they were out, which is understandable. But I only received 4 small shrimp with the meal.
They also offer British fare.. I canât speak on that as I have not tried it. It seems they should pick one and sell just that as Iâm sure they both suffer.
The Aussie who took my order was very nice and professional. The inside of the restaurant was clean, but...
