Five of us visited the new Spanky's for Friday fish fry at 4:15 pm. We were told it would be a 45 minute wait and they were serving drinks, but not food, on the patio. The bartender apparently doesn't know the difference between "tall" and "double" drinks. We were charged for doubles when ordering talls, but didn't see that until we got home, unfortunately. We were called to our table in about 25 minutes, but the hostess noted that they decided to serve food on the patio. One person in our party wanted to eat inside, so we proceeded in. It was LOUD in there, I could barely hear the person next to me, much less those across the table. So, if that bothers you, I would suggest eating outside if it's offered. Two people ordered the supreme pizza. I asked my husband to order a large so we could take some home. The pizza was fabulous! It had more meat than I've ever seen on a pizza that we didn't make at home. The leftovers were great reheated, but my husband was disgruntled that they didn't offer pizza boxes and we had to pile the leftover pieces on top of one another in a styrofoam carry out container. The crust was excellent, crispy and yeasty. I opted for the house salad topped with an appetizer order of bang bang shrimp. The shrimp were tasty and cooked to perfection, not overdone and not bready. I would happily order that again. The last two in our party both ordered the perch fish fry. Neither of them finished their meal and couldn't get anyone else in the party to even try it. There was little flesh on the pieces, they were heavily breaded and over-fried. The two that ordered it both referred to it as fried shoe leather... all skin and no fish. It's probably a result of what Spanky's is buying from their vendor rather than how they were prepared. I suggest ordering larger fillets, even if the price has to be raised. Both people said they would never ever order the perch again, and from the looks of it, I certainly wouldn't either. Service was great. Orders were taken quickly and served quickly, but we had to chase down our server for the bill... not a big deal. Our server was cordial. We were seated by the front door and the hostess was at the back door. During our meal, we had to redirect at least 20 groups of people back to the hostess because they were just idly standing around our table, not knowing what to do, while we were trying to eat. All it takes is a sign on the front door to check in with the hostess at the back. All in all, for a place that just opened up, I think they did rather well. Pizza, their star menu item, was great and service was good. I would have given them 3.5 stars, as I think they have potential to be better than your average bar, but google only allows whole stars, and I don't think they are at a 4 yet, because of the awful perch and overcharging our drinks. I will try them again after they get their processes more...
Read moreedit I appreciated the response from the owner, and I would suggest the following as they train their staff. This is the script they need to train. " Hello and welcome to spanky's! Is this your first time here? It is! Well. Let me explain a few things to you. ( Talks about the food and cocktails) We currently use the untapped app for our beer list as it is ever changing. Are you familiar with untapped? (If yes) Excellent! Just go ahead and search for spanky's as the venue and you'll see all the beers that we currently have, pay specific attention to the ones that say on Deck as those are beers we anticipate bringing in in the near future. (If no) Okay no problem. You'll see on the caddy, the instructions and a QR reader to download the app. Untapped is an app that restaurants such as ours use to post all the beers that we have available and the ones we plan on bringing in. Pay attention to anything that says on Deck as that is something that is not currently in our stock. I'll give you some time to look over our beer list as I get you some Waters" Boy, that would have made all the difference. First timer here. The place was packed on a Sunday night! The food was good (bang bang shrimp and wings). Now for the bad. Beer. All I wanted was a beer menu, guess what there isn't one!!! How is that so you say, I have no idea. I asked the server for the beer menu and here was the process. Our server very nice woman pulled out her phone opened up an app handed me her phone so that I could see the beer menu that was posted on untapped, which surprisingly had twice as many beers that are "on deck". I ordered a standard beer cuz I wasn't about to scroll through this woman's phone. Later I wanted to have another beer but I wanted to try something new I asked the server again for a beer menu she provided me her phone I told her where is a beer menu I don't want to have to use your phone to look at a beer menu here's the process. Take out your personal device download the untapped app fill out some information look through the venues for the restaurant you're eating at look for their beer list and scroll through the beer list on your own this is borderline insanity. I was shocked that there wasn't a QR reader at the table where I could scan it to get a beer list the whole thing seemed ridiculous. My wife and I will for sure return for the food but if they don't want to serve beer they should...
