This is a second restaraunt - the ladies who run a very successful eatery in Mystic said they would open another one 'when pigs fly!'
Well, then.
Expect a wait on Sundays but the line moves fairly quickly. There is a big patio and a couple of benches outside and - this is unusual around here - they don't mind if you go in and grab some coffee. They have unlimited, self serve coffee here - one of the many cool and homey touches.
The seating is basic and cozy. There is enough room so you don't feel crowded but they are squeezing every possible seat they can out of the space. And this is a good thing; the food is worth waiting for but I would rather be close to a neighbor than wait another ten minutes. Parking is in the back and it too is cozy - if you are going with a group, carpool - people will love you for it!
The staff is invariably courteous and attentive. I have yet to have a server not treat me right. The food is outstanding and I LOVE their Irish Corn Beef Hash omelette with hash browns on the side. Their menu is solid and the food is top shelf.
Do make sure you bring cash - they do not take plastic.
If you are in Waterford, this is a solid choice for breakfast. Don't let the line worry you - it does move!
UPDATE
Today I tried their grits and bacon side. I spent enough time in the South to develop a taste for grits. Yankees don't do grits. I am generally disappointed.
When Pigs Fly does grits right. Could use a touch more salt but the first time I've had good grits north of...
Read moreI’ve loved this restaurant for years but was sorely disappointed this morning. I dined with 2 friends - one got the Oliver omelet ($11) and the other 2 of us got the ‘Healthy’ special which was described as Sweet Potato and broccoli hash topped by 2 eggs over easy w/parmesan cheese, fruit and toast. This was $20 but sounded tastier and more substantial than the omelet choices. What we 2 received was very dry shredded white potato hash browns with a few broccoli pieces in it, and perhaps a few crumbles of sweet potato topped with 2 fried eggs (plus toast&melon/grapes). This was not at all what was expected and was tasteless. We each left 3/4 of the ‘hash’ on the dish. When we told the waitress she claimed that she could see a little bit of orange so that must be the sweet potato. Then she said “Do you want me to take something off your bill?” Not willing to start haggling we just said “No” and she put down the bill and left. Most surprising was that the $20 price tag did not even include coffee! ($3.50). I was really, really disappointed in this experience. Lesson learned - don’t take the Specials description...
Read moreThis is a wonderful restaurant. It is right along the main street in the town next to the fire department. There is parking behind the restaurant and then you walk and enter in the front of the restaurant. There is a deck outside where you can eat but we ate inside. You check in at the little podium. Drinks are serve yourself coffee, water or tea. We were seated quickly but know that you need to arrive here early or you will be waiting. This is an understandably popular restaurant and so gets busy. The staff came and took our drink order quickly. They have a great menu with plenty of options. I got the french toast and a tea. The food came out within 10 minutes and was excellent. THe price is very reasonable. I highly recommend this place for all people who want a wonderful New England eating...
