I can honestly tell you that I have been searching for a go to breakfast place for most of my life.
Two times in the last three weeks. My wife and I have made our way to Little Fat Gretchen's's in Waupaca Wisconsin just so I could have their biscuits and gravy.
When you walk into the joint, you are immediately reminded of an old school diner. Seats at the counter, as well as booths and tables and they are all full. When my wife and I went the first week, we got in quickly, because we were willing to sit at the counter. Truth be told, if it's only the two of us eating, I would probably almost always eat at the counter. There's just so much going on in this place, and from the counter, you can see the cooks in the kitchen, the waitresses as they scurry behind the counter, and a glance over your shoulder lets you see the rest of the patrons.
Another cool feature of Little Fat Gretchen's's is their case of fresh made bakery. The first weekend we decided to take home a couple pieces of double chocolate cake to celebrate my wife's birthday. They had some fantastic pies this past weekend, but I managed to talk myself out of it.
Back to our breakfast. My freshman year of college was spent in Troy Alabama, where I was introduced to that gastronomic breakfast known as biscuits and gravy. To say I have been disappointed by what is offered as biscuits and gravy in the north, would be putting it far too mildly .
Seeing that they had biscuits and gravy on the menu I set the bar extremely low but ordered anyway. Thank goodness I did.
Our server was incredibly friendly, checked on us often for coffee refills, and brought us our food in a timely manner.
When I looked at the biscuits, my hopes rose because rather than store-bought biscuits, reheated in a steamer microwave, these were homemade biscuits. Too often restaurants will skip putting sausage in the sausage gravy and instead serve you a pasty white concoction. Were they have overcompensated with pepper to make up for the lack of sausage.
Not so at Little Fat Gretchen's. The sausage gravy had sausage in it and just the right amount of pepper to make it interesting. The peace d'resistance of my breakfast that morning was a perfectly cooked over-easy egg. You would think that is not a difficult request, but it far too many restaurants an over easy egg comes back, medium or hard. That morning I was greeted by an egg that went pierced with a fork, sent a wonderful river of warm yoke over my biscuits and gravy.
I think the amount of moaning I did while eating my breakfast that morning might've made the waitresses uncomfortable. I'm guessing they wondered whether or not I had gas I was having a foodgasm. Trust me... It was a foodgasm.
So as to not embarrass my wife, I did not lick my plate clean. Instead, I scraped as much gravy from it as I could with my knife and fork. That's how much I loved that biscuits and gravy. It was the best I have had outside of Troy, Alabama .
So get your butt over to Little Fat Gretchen's and order the biscuits and gravy. If that's your thing, you won't be...
Read moreWe are locals that have been here a few times before. Today we went for breakfast and waited about 10 minutes for a waitress to come to our table and then another 40 minutes and no one had come back to our table to even refill coffee. My mom waived down someone that passed and asked if she could have her coffee refilled. The lady, who happened to be the owner, went back to grab our waitress. The waitress came out with the owner to explain that they were having an issue with the computers and tickets weren’t printing to the kitchen.
So my mom put her hand over her coffee to stop them from filling it while I asked if that meant our ticket had been printed late or not printed at all. We had my son with us and he was very hungry at this point. After already waiting this long if the food hadn’t been started yet, we were considering going somewhere else since the place was busy and it would likely be quite some time before we got our food.
At this the owner lost it. She was VERY offended by my mom stopping them from filling her coffee and had such a huge attitude as she told us to leave. We hadn’t been throwing a fit about it. It was just a matter of it we wanted to wait longer for my son to eat or leave and get food quickly somewhere else.
My mom told her that she was being rude and she said “yea well I own this place!” And stormed off into the kitchen while complaining about us.
It was so disrespectful, rude, and unprofessional. If you’re having an issue with your computers, that’s fine. It happens. But you should tell your customers before they’ve been waiting so long and then not treat them so horribly because they want to go somewhere else. I couldn’t believe she would act in such as way as the owner, especially in the middle of the dining room where...
Read moreWe went here for the first time today with my Dad and we had a party of six. We waited a bit for our waitress but to be expected when it was busy. She was very polite and very was on top of making sure our drinks were full and our food was good. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere reminded me of an old time diner. We finished our food and within five minutes of us finishing our food a different waitress walked up to us and told us that we had to leave because they had another party waiting. We were not even finished with our drinks and we were actually planning on getting desert. I have never been told that we had to leave a restaurant because they had people waiting. After I confronted the owner about it she was extremely rude and unprofessional. Our original waitress was so embarrassed and I felt bad for her to have to witness such rudeness from her employer. I will never be back to this restaurant again. I will definitely make sure that others are aware of how rude this business owner is. Thanks for nothing. Pretty sad when you spend over $100 and get treated like this. Pretty sad that she treats...
