I am not an egg person, so take note that this eliminates a large portion of the breakfast menu, and my opinion is based on other selections.
I'm not an egg guy, but I'm a diner guy, and one who considers customer service to be paramount to the success of any business. In the realm of food, it is service and food first, then other issues like price, location, parking, atmosphere... that tie in the whole package.
All this said, just like never trusting a skinny cook, I don't eat at places where the parking lot never has an abundance of cars, or one where the dining areas look empty. QH has a steady stream of customers, and I would guess that 90% of them are repeat. So, if it's good enough for them, it should be for you, too.
The location is great for a number of reasons- adequate parking, HC accessible, and just far enough out of town that there's almost always an empty seat.
I was disappointed in the service and food we received. The word "underwhelming" comes to mind for the food and "inefficient" for the service.
This review says what it does because QH is SO close to perfection that it bothers me they're falling short of an experience that says, "oh yeah, let's drive to that place, I love it!" And... I hope it is read with this in mind. I'm a huge independent, small business, and family-run... anything. So I'm rooting for this place in a huge way.
The staff were cordial enough, so there are good people to work with. The menu says their kitchen is capable, and the food generally attracts a LOT of people- so there's that.
My perspective is a bit unique, I've been to MANY diners and small restaurants, some of which I still ride to on the motorcycle or drive to for that destination alone.
My suggestions from my perspective and experience eating at QH are:
Don't get special orders wrong. It is not easy for -most- customers to ask for something specific because they already realize it makes an impact on the server, the cook, and even for the check. So when they do ask, get it right, and ask them if it is before you leave their table- especially if you're already hectic and unlikely to return in 2-3 minutes. Never just assume a customer is being difficult or picky- this is part of the job, and I totally understand it feels that way, but you're not getting paid for your feelings, you're being paid to make sure your team is successful. Our servers never made us feel this way, but the follow through didn't happen and the food was not as asked. I know, mistakes happen all the time, and I get that. This is just friendly reminder and training speak coming from a good place.
Communicate. Wow, if you're busy, say so! If you're falling behind, missed something, the food is wrong, apologize, and be sincere. You'll find your customers will do things like prep the table for cleaning, put condiments back the way they were, and, oh yeah, you'll likely get a better tip. People can see things fall apart as they always do, in every establishment sometimes, but when you communicate with them like you really care, you've often created a customer relationship where they'd walk into traffic for you. Don't discount that extra bit you did for them: only the very worst individuals miss it. Most remember, and it becomes a critical reason why they return. Even a disastrous waitress or waiter shine when they're sincere with their customers. Staff at QH really didn't fail in this regard, either, but it could be a bit better, and of course, some are better than others. Watch for those few leaders and make sure you recognize them and utilize them to train your next generation of staff!
Lastly, I would recommend another way to pay checks other than the counter. It gets congested right there and impacts counter customers, those exiting, and those waiting. Not critical but just an observation.
Again, all of this is just one person's opinion, but I hope it helps for feedback. You'll see...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars, I would. My husband and I love local diners in PA and drove an extra hour down the Turnpike until we could find one. Unfortunately, we found the Quentin Haus. The coffee was typical diner coffee and our waitress was nice enough and seemed naive enough to not realize she is serving actual rotting trash to her poor customers.
My husband's salad came with the house bacon dressing, easily two cup's worth drowning the handful of iceberg lettuce on his plate. It looked terrible, like a congealed can of chicken gravy dumped on a salad and it tasted even worse. As far I can taste, there are literally only five ingredients: lukewarm bacon fat at that not-quite solid consistency, undercooked bacon halfheartedly chopped for stringy fatty surprises, flour as a thickener (and enough that you can really taste the bland flour flavor), sugar (because why not? why not throw sugar on top of bacon grease, that'll be a punch in the throat), and flaccid hard boiled eggs that are so undercooked they seem to melt into the gel of the dressing.
I ordered a reuben and have been burping up progressively more rotten tasting reuben since we left. My husband ordered a sausage and stuffing platter, and got a whole sausage unceremoniously dumped on top of over saturated box stuffing, and coated in canned beef gravy.
We both started with diarrhea within two minutes of each other, so I can only imagine cross contamination in the nightmare kitchen responsible for these soulless creations is to blame, since we did not order the same meals.
Please, do yourself a favor and stick with gas station beef jerky, or eat some grass from the median to tide...
