Valley Fresh — Restaurant in West Orange

Imagine getting precooked chopped chicken in buffalo sauce from a jar and scooping it out into a wrap. Not what you would expect from a “fresh” place. Well, that’s what happened.

Today was my second and last time ordering from Valley Fresh.

The food is mediocre- I picked them because they usually have a quick delivery time and my orders are pretty simple. I also think it's important to support local business, however this place misses the mark. Thus far, my orders have consisted of cheesesteaks, chicken wraps, and salads. There was nothing special about any of them- pretty regular tasting sandwiches and basic wraps/salad. But today's order which had 2 Avocado Buffalo Chicken wraps, was AWFUL! So bad, I took two bites and couldn't eat it- my mother didn't eat hers either.

The chicken tasted bland and was mushy. It was like chopped chicken, but lots of fat and skin- no chunks of white meat. My first time having a chicken wrap from them had freshly cooked chicken in it, so I assumed all the wraps were the same. After all, they are Valley FRESH!

I called Valley Fresh because it was inedible, and I was hoping they could replace the wraps with ones that had fresh chicken in it. I was put on the phone with the owner who apologized saying that the Buffalo chicken was a precooked item that they SCOOP OUT OF A JAR. They did not make it fresh in house. They said to ask for grilled chicken next time if I wanted that. I let them know that the menu descriptions did not it say the chicken would be chopped and not a fresh option. They should accurately describe their products. I would have never ordered that item if I knew what it was actually composed of. The buffalo chicken I was served was worse than something you'd get at Subway, where everything is processed and scooped out of a package. Disappointing for a place called Valley FRESH!

Unfortunately the new wraps that arrived were mediocre. Flat-top cooked chicken (not grilled), but still bland and not good quality. They also did not follow my instruction of no sauce this time (sauce was bland). If it were my business I would have added a nice touch like free cookies or dessert as a way to say sorry, but nothing was provided. (Which is ok, I wasn't looking for it, but having been in the food industry for 6+ years I know what restaurants can do to please customers.)

This experience put me and everyone in my household off to ordering...

Omg, where should I start??? I came here with a couple of co-workers during our lunch break. I ordered the fish and chips along with the other orders. All items were placed in the bag and stapled. I decided to go through the bag to ensure the order was accurate. As I opened up what was supposed to be fish and chips I noticed that it looks exactly like chicken breast. I immediately tasted it and turned to the guy that placed our order and asked is this fish. He said yes. I said it taste like chicken. After another small bite and getting my coworkers to taste it and tearing the chicken apart we all confirmed it was chicken. I continued to let the guy in the front know that it is indeed chicken. He continued to go back and forth with me insisting it was fish. A young man came to pick up his order so I asked that guy to take a look at my meal and tell me what he thinks it is and he tells me it looks like chicken then I asked him to smell it and he confirmed it was chicken. The guy in the front asked the cook is it fish or chicken and the cook said it was fish. Second customer cones in, a hispanic lady and I asked her the same thing I asked the first customer. She said it is absolutely chicken and told the guy in Spanish that it is chicken. He still insisted it was fish then proceeded to tell me that I was disrespectful and just to get me out he would give me all our money back for the 3 meals. For me, it wasn't about the money. It was the principal and i wanted it acknowledged that it was chicken and not fish. I saw another cook in the back so I asked him to come out and check my order and I gave him the chicken I tore apart and he turned to the front guy and said THIS IS CHICKEN!!!! I then said I told you so. The guy immediately gave my coworker the full refund but no apology took place. I don't know who this guy is taking orders in the front but he lacks customer service. Not once did he apologize or was empathetic to my needs. He was standing on continuing to tell me it was fish without ever checking it. I will never return. Also the cook in the back obviously doesn't know the difference between fish and chicken because when he was asked he said it was fish probably knowing his mistake but fearing for his job because the guy in the front is not nice at all.
