This place is AWESOME! I totally recommend. It's probably my new favorite restaurant in West Point and in my top 5 for the whole Golden Triangle. I worked in Mexican restaurants for years in between college and beyond. I love Latin American food and know a lot about it. Long story, but I'm also bilingual and appreciate authentic food.
This place is truly special. When it comes to Latin food, you've got your typical Mexican restaurants, then also the more authentic street vendors or tiendas. IMO, this one is the best of both. It's got your typical burritos, quesadillas, Happy Plate (Primos Bowl here), etc. But it also has real street tacos, elote, birias, huevos rancheros, horchata, tortilla soup, al pastor, barbacoa, etc.
This place does not skimp on the meat like most places do. And even better, the prices are still very reasonable and cheaper than most other restaurants in the area. Me and my wife forgot to take pictures because we were so excited, so you'll have to take my word for it. I got some shrimp and steak tacos (camarones and carne asada) for about $3 each and they were absolutely stuffed. I had to force myself to finish 4 of them. My wife's Primo Bowl had a mountain of chicken, steak and shrimp on it.
5 Hermanos is kind of a mix between the best of a "sit down" restaurant and fast food place. You order at the counter like a fast food place, then pick a table. While you wait for your food, they bring you chips and salsa and queso/bean dip while you wait. I forgot to ask if the queso/bean dip was normal because I've never seen that before, they could have been running a special or something that day, but I definitely wasn't complaining lol. When your food is ready, they bring it out to you, and then they clean up when you're done. They have sweet and unsweetened tea, which is self-serve. They also have a self-serve sauce table with special sauces (tomatillo, salsa, sliced cucumbers, carrots, limes, etc). I friggin love this setup. I love my sweet tea, which most authentic tiendas don't have and most waiters at restaurants can't keep up with my refills anyway, especially if I'm eating something spicy. I also love tomatillo verde, which usually costs extra at Mexican restaurants, they always bring them out in awkward bowls, and on top of that, they never bring enough for 3+ tacos. Also, the cucumbers are great for cleansing your pallette, kind of like celery after wings. In sum, the service is very fast and convenient and the prices very low because of this setup.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I love authentic tiendas, but unfortunately most others arent very welcoming or easy for us gringos to visit and tend to only be enjoyed by the local immigrants. This one is different. My wife really loved the place, but didn't when I took her to a couple others in the past. When we went, there was a very mixed crowd of local whites and blacks, along with some immigrants. So, it's not just us, lots of other locals who probably aren't experienced or accustomed to authentic "tacquerias" (taco shops) seemed to really enjoy it too.
These guys also have GREAT hours, unlike most of West Point. Everybody else around here tends to close really early or only be open for limited hours. I still haven't tried the local Greek place because they close at 6 freakin pm. 5 Hermanos is open from like 9am to 10pm, serves breakfast, and has a drive thru! Talk about convenience. These others all make you, the customer, work around them instead of vice versa like it's supposed to be.
Last but not least, the food itself tasted amazing at 5 Hermanos, all the way down to the salsa. We just tried a different new Mexican restaurant last week and it was plain old Mexican food, nothing special, so I mean it.
So, in sum, 5 stars, this place is great and I highly recommend. The service is fast and welcoming, food is high quality and unique but also has lots of safer options if you don't feel like experiementing, its convenient, they don't skimp on portions, and I literally can't think of...
Read moreHands down the most LEGIT and authentic Mexican taco shop in MS. I cannot stress enough how amazing and real their food is. If you want real cheese on your food (not white american plastic cheese), fresh tortillas, amazing sopapilla, this is the place. If you are from the west coast, this is the closest to home I have found in this area. I haven't been able to trust reviews in the past due to local reviews from those who haven't been to Mexico or close to it to experience REAL mexican food. This will be the only place I come from now on. 1000x yes...
Read moreMy new go to taco shop! Food was SO delicious! It is real authentic Mexican food. I purchased the cinco Hermano’s quesadilla with a cup of cheese.. I ordered to go do it came with chips and salsa (also very good) great experience, such a healthy portion I couldn’t eat all of it so I saved it for next dinner. The wait is not long at all during normal busy hours and they also have a stand where you can get toppings for your taco (cucumbers, radish, etc) I will visit here again to try different items and so glad I stopped by. In total I...
