overall, a solid performance for the price point. I appreciate the Chinese/Taiwanese homestyle offerings (ie, dishes that are actually consumed in normal households, as opposed to 'sweet/sour chicken' or 'pork fried rice' or 'general gao's chicken'). We had the pork belly bun. Good taste, although the meat is a little tough -- my mother's melts in the mouth. Could use a little more cilantro. The dandan mien was not great, from the color (dark brown versus reddish-brown) to the taste (it had an oddly sweet taste somewhat reminiscent of peanut butter) to the non-soupiness of it. I did taste some sichuan peppercorns, though. I sent it back and exchanged it for the 'Beijing' noodles with meat sauce. Sauce was a little sweeter than I'm used to, and it could use a bit more cucumber to balance out the savoriness. But tastewise, solid. Noodles, I substituted for the fresh and not the premade type. The shrimp dumplings look like they're pre-frozen as I didn't see anyone standing around making these. Service was friendly -- they willingly accommodated my return of the dandan noodles. I would actually come back and try their pork ramen and whatever homestyle items that do not appear to be pre-frozen. I would avoid the Korean and Japanese dishes because their strength lies in homestyle Chinese/Taiwanese. I'd also avoid the organic fried chicken bun listed under "Taiwanese". As someone who comes from Taiwan and whose mother was a Chinese chef, I can say there is no such thing in Taiwan. or at least, nobody in Taiwan puts fried chicken in a bun and call it...
Read moreParking is difficult, and the interior is bright and clean if not elegant or trendy. You order at the cashier, and they give you a number on a stem to set on your table, and they bring the dishes out to the table as the kitchen prepares them.
I went with three friends for lunch on a Tuesday, and we found a table, shortly before 12:00. The restaurant was full by the time we were done with lunch.
I ordered the pan-seared pork dumplings, the pan-seared vegetable dumplings and the steamed roasted bbq pork. One of my companions ordered the pork dumplings as well, and the wonton soup. The other companion ordered the Petit Chicken Dumplings with Slow Cooked Sichuan Sauce, the Steamed Traditional Beef bun and the Fried Rice.
The pan-seared pork dumplings were tasty if completely conventional and as expected. The pan-seared vegetable dumplings (which came in a green dough) could have had a little bit more filling in them, but were also tasty. The Slow Cooked Sichuan Sauce which came with the Petit Chicken Dumplings was the star of the meal, and made everything that was dipped into it delicious, including the other two dumpling types and the steamed buns.
The prices are reasonable, and there were enough other items on the menu and that looked good (not to mention items carried out to other tables) that makes me want to return as soon as I can. Everything was very tasty, and I'm ready to take a copy of their takeout menu and start crossing items off one by one to make sure I systematically eat my way thru...
Read moreI ordered the Chili broth with pork wontons, hand cut noodles fried egg, baby bok choy, & enoki mushrooms and crunchy fried shallots (?) garnish. The noodles and wontons were superb. The baby bok choy a deep green and sweet. I liked how the wontons had a faintly sweet taste and were soft & palatable. A recipe for wontons from Canton in perhaps a Sichuan style dish is an innovative touch. The broth was oversalted and not really hot ( temperature.) The scallion and chilis, plus chili oil were lost in the salt. It should taste of broth. That said, the scallion pancake - not bad. Dipping sauce forgotten until I asked, but not a big deal. They are a teeny bit bready along with being chewy & flaky. I'd serve a larger portion of scallion pancake but that's just me. I like how cook books are available for patrons to read over their meal. That's exactly what I like to read. The decor is colorful ( red chairs , pale melon walls )with interestingly designed light fixtures.
Unfortunately, extra napkins are available by the doors next to a trash receptacle. It's drafty by the door. I basically cleaned my plate and will recommend Dumpling Daughter to friends and family. It's a great spot and sometimes hard to find authentic Chinese food outside of Boston. It's out of respect for the craft of cooking and their beautiful menu that I'm writing this review. I'd like to try all of their...
