Great food and beer! It was a wonderful experience, except for our waitor wasn't the most engaging. After we got there, he greeted us quickly and asked us if we knew what we wanted. After giving him the deer in the headlights look he then quickly realized it was our first time there. He didn't offer much guidance to our beer selection until we asked him. But once we had him talking about the beer, his knowledge was plentiful. He didn't stop back to our table very often, which normally is okay with me, but I know some people would be turned off by only seeing their waitor or waitress a couple times. When we were done, I had to ask for a box for my food, he then brought my box and the check. When we paid, he brought the slips back for us to sign and walked away. We signed the slips and started to head out. Didn't recieve a courtesy statement on our way out or even an acknowledgement. It was around 11 pm and there were only a handful of patrons left. We drove 2 hours to go here, enjoyed ourselves with the delicious food and beer, but unfortunately had a sub par experience. I do look forward to coming back soon, but hopefully our service will be much better. I am giving them 4 stars because of the awesome recommendation for my beer and my food was phenomenal otherwise I would be giving it 2 or 3 stars.

I have tried to make this a place to go for a night out or family dinner. Time and time again I try. Why? The drinks are ok at best (M-43 is good) and the food is subpar (Mac and cheese is super dry and the only thing going for them are the inconsistent cheese curds and really good brussel sprouts). Those are the good things. The service is even less impressive than the dry Mac and cheese. This time we had a server (Molly I think) who didn’t take our food order until we were done with our appetizer and she didn’t even check on us after we received our food. Yes I’m doing this as we sit in the restaurant. Nobody has any level urgency or desire to provide an experience. This will be the last time. I tried. I really did. We have been here a total of 5 times and in all reality it was four more than it should have been. I can get the M-43 at the grocery store. This could be a great place but tripped and fell on its face. They remain in business because there are not a lot of other options in this town and the outside beer sales must be doing well.

Stopped in here for dinner on Tuesday. Service was great. The food overall was delicious. I had the Avocado Steakhouse Burger with poutine, and we shared a pretzel. The pretzel is really a good value, it's huge and delicious. We loved the beer cheese dip and the honey mustard and stone ground mustard that also came with it. The steakhouse burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. I loved the avocado, and their Steakhouse ranch dressing to go in it. The poutine was fair. I have had a lot of poutine, from all over the country and Canada. The fries they used were good and I loved the cheese curds they used. The fried egg was also a delicious addition. Where the poutine fell short for me was in the gravy. I'm fairly certain it's either a packaged or out of a can brown gravy. In general we had a great meal, the service was outstanding. We'll be back. I likely won't order the poutine again though. But everything else was really good.

Having enjoyed their beer in other locations, my wife and I thought it was a great reason to stop on our way home. The parking lot was filled with pot holes, which after reading reviews now is something that has been going on for months. We arrived about 9:50PM.

It seemed busy when we got in, but there were plenty of tables empty. A sign said wait to be seated. We waited over 5 minutes to get acknowledged, we were standing there along with another couple. During this time, we observed a man get up to track down his waiter to pay and leave. We were then finally seated by the "host." After another 5 minutes or so our waitress came over to get our drink order. At this point it's after 10PM and she told us that it's only apps. We said give us a moment because we were planning on ordering more than just apps. She didnt say why this was until she came back and I asked. The reason is because they decide to close the kitchen down and clean up between 10PM and 11PM. We were never told this when we were seated and they never apologized. Apparently the guy that sat us who was a bartender should have told us. The times are key because I feel that they delayed seating us and taking orders so we wouldn't be able to order entrees. The whole rest of the service was minimal since I believe she knew we were dissatisfied, yet we never said anything. One other waiter seemed to be busting his butt since he had many tables, yet our waitress kept hanging out at the bar. Our waitress also never told us her name and left us sitting with empty glasses for quite some time. Another table had entrees delivered about 20 minutes after we were already seated and had drinks, while we weren't even allowed to order entrees. No one else even came in after us and the other couple. We only got an app and a drink and left.

They definitely lost money because we would have stayed longer to order more food and drinks. I would be curious to see if it's better around mid afternoon in the future, but at this point very unimpressed. The food and drinks were very good, but the service and staff...

I just came back from a beer vacation centered around Grand Rapids. I could not wait to stop at Old Nation on my way home. They make one 2 of my favorite beers. All my friends just raved about this place, but I was a bit disappointed. The only beers I saw available were the ones I have already had, Boss, M-43 and Strawberry M-43. I just looked on the website and none of those beers were shown anywhere. I almost think the waiter didn't know what was going on with the beers, very disappointing. I should take a bit of responsibility for not pressing the issue in regard to what beer was available. The food was just okay, it started out good with the fried cheese curds, but the marinara was ice cold, like straight out of the fridge. I had the beer cheese soup and honestly it was not edible, It seemed like it was burnt and the cream had broke from its intended smooth texture. I ate 2 spoons of it and set it aside, the waiter didn't even notice how much was left when he took it away. I had a Reuben that was completely average, little sauce and a piece of sauerkraut the diameter of a beer can, oddest piece of sauerkraut I've ever seen, LOL. I ordered a side of mac and cheese which they forgot to bring me, finally can and it was just okay as well, the crust was rushed and had no time to brown up the panko topping. My wife's french fries tasted like frozen fries from the grocery store. She had the crispy chicken club and she said it was so-so at best. The more I think about it the more disappointed I am with my whole visit, especially with the lack of beer knowledge from the waiter. I will still be a loyal Old Nation customer, the beer...

Update: 6/26/24 updating my last review from a few years ago due to a pretty crappy trend that seems to be happening here... I'll make this short and sweet, came in here tonight to sit at the bar and just have a beer. They were definitely not too busy as half the bar was empty and half the tables were empty as well so just moderately busy maybe... This is the second time that I've come here within 2 months where I was just completely ignored while sitting at the bar waiting to get a drink by the bartenders... Not even a 'hello" or a "We'll be right with you" just flat out. Ignored for almost 10 minutes till I just got up and left, this exact same thing happened to me last time I was here in almost the exact same situation. The bar staff is rude. They don't acknowledge anyone who comes in and sits down or make you feel comfortable about being there. Pretty unacceptable for a place like this that for so many years I've been a patron of and loved going to. Honestly not sure if I'm going to be back or not. And what I was telling a buddy this story tonight which prompted me to do this review. He had the almost exact same experience about a month ago there.

Update: 4/5/18 this place just keeps getting better... With the addition of ME-MI and several other NEIPA's it just amazing to stop in here and hang out. All around great brewery off the beaten path.. hands down one of my favorite beers M-43. Some people call NE's a fad but there is no way this many people can be wrong about it. Love the atmosphere here and selection of other craft beers on tap. The food is pretty darn good as well. Definitely will be...
