TLDR: Wonderful locally owned bakery. Come for the artisan sourdough and desserts.
Vibe: 5/5. Located right on the main street of Woodstock, Flour & Water has all the hometown bakery charm. The building has 2 floors, with the upstairs being a beautiful dining room complete with a picturesque balcony overlooking the street. The downstairs level is where the main counter and open kitchen are located. The decor fully embraces that of a country bakery. A large glass dessert case takes center stage of the bakery complete with oversized glass cookie jars on top and wicker baskets filled to the brim with fresh breads and pastries.
Service: 5/5. We stopped at Flour & Water on a Friday at around 3pm on a Saturday. According to their website/Google and Yelp, they typically close at 3pm, but when we arrived they were 100% open. I believe this was due to the busy nature of the time we came, as there was an Arts and Crafts festival going on in the street nearby with many people coming in looking for an afternoon coffee/snack. The staff was more than helpful in guiding us through their menu and making suggestions. We were on the hunt for a bread that would compliment shashuka, and the baker recommended a black pepper parmesan sourdough they had on special, which fit the bill perfectly!
Food: 5/5. As mentioned above, our main purpose for stopping by was to find a bread to pair nicely with our shashuka. The pepper parmesan sourdough loaf was amazing. Perfectly crusty and peppery outside paired with a soft savory inside took our shashuka to the next level. We also grabbed a latte and a snickerdoodle cookie to enjoy as we walked around Woodstock. The cookie was humongous, being the size of a dessert plate and perfectly baked. The latte was also well done and paired nicely with the cinnamon sugar...
Read moreI don’t normally write reviews because, frankly, most places don’t deserve one. But Flour and Water? They’ve earned it. I’ve been here a bunch of times, and today’s experience was just as solid as the rest. Walked in about 15 minutes before closing, expecting the usual “we’re about to close” hassle. Didn’t get it. Instead, I got greeted with a smile.
I went for the Chip Dip Chicken Sandwich, some chips, and grabbed the sourdough bread for later (it makes killer egg-in-a-holes, and my wife’s obsessed with it). In ten minutes flat, the sandwich was at my table. And speaking of tables—this one didn’t wobble. I’ve walked out of places for that alone, but Flour and Water keeps it right. I like the atmosphere of this place. It has a warm country charm.
Now, let’s get to the sandwich: the chicken was crispy, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The crispy onions on top? Yeah, they nailed that too. The sauce? Perfection. The bread was toasted just right—not too soft, not too crunchy—and the sandwich held together with every bite. No falling-apart nonsense. It was layers of flavor, punch after punch.
And as good as that sandwich was, I didn’t feel like it clogged my arteries. I felt fulfilled but not weighed down, and unlike most chicken sandwiches, it didn’t make me tired. I feel downright silly writing a review about a chicken sandwich, but it’s very rare that a taste puts a smile on my face. And I’ve been to 30+ Michelin-star restaurants.
Bottom line? This sandwich was an explosion of badass flavor. I’ll be back. Flour and Water is...
Read moreLaughing…..! and shaking my head at myself for not just walking out of this place…….to funny. My wife and I are seniors and my wife asked me if I could go find a bakery for a bagel and a cream puff or a cinnamon roll. Went looking for a bakery in Woodstock Va to get some bagels doughnuts cream puffs and cinnamon rolls. Found this place, that didn’t make a single bakery good I was looking for (bakery?). Asked the gal if there was another bakery in town, she politely said no with a smile. I then decided my wife might be ok with a couple of cupcakes and a slice of cake for now. Line behind me was getting longer as the gal helped me over in the only (small) display case there. She helped me to pick a couple mini cupcakes (that’s all they had) and a decent sized slice of cake out for my wife. @ the cash register another gal rang me up. $14+……. I didn’t say anything (embarrassing). Later on I asked my wife how her cupcakes and cake were, she said the cupcakes were ok at best and the cake slice was a little hard (old) and again just ok at best nothing to talk about. But almost $15 for two mini cupcakes and a single slice of chocolate cake. Laughing at myself again…….and again…. I guess this place specializes in bread making, which is why they call themselves a bakery. Not the kind of bakery were used to back home that makes everything you’d expect a bakery to make and you always know your near a bakery by the fresh aromas outside as your walking up before you even go through the...
