I’ve been coming to herbies since I was kid and tonight is the only night where I can honestly say they did a disservice to themselves. My husband and I tried placing an order over the phone as we do when I have the craving for some fish and chips. When we began calling at 8:15, an hour and 45 min from their close time and 45 min from their kitchen close time (9pm). No one answered the phone for 20 min, so we decided to take the 5 min drive over as we live fairly close. Thankfully my husband ran in just in time to place an order and came back to the car to wait with me. As he hadn’t even stepped out of the establishment for 2min they began turning the lights off and apparently had locked the doors on him. He ran back to the entrance and started knocking on the door to which all the staff ignored him and he couldn’t call because they were ignoring the phones as well. When he finally managed to get inside and only because another patron was leaving, he overheard that they were closing an hour early because no One was at the bar and apparently thats where they make their money. Not the people trying to place orders on the phone or people who were trying to get in but the patrons who are drinking are the most important to them apparently. To top it off every single staff he encountered seemed annoyed with him being there at all. For a business to be open for as long as they have they certainly don’t care about the customer and only what goes into their pockets. What a terrible shame that this is what it comes down to.
UPDATE My review got the attention of one of the employees that passed it along to their manager Raphaela (I might be butchering how she spells her name, sorry in advance) My husband and I had went again but this time during the day and she was working and got our name and numbers. She spoke with the staff that was on the night of incident and even gave us a gift card for two meals. I can’t begin to explain how much that meant to us both, as I had told her I have been here for years and it just felt really good to have been taken care of. I enjoy the food and atmosphere Herbie’s, it was just all around great experience to have the manager personally take care of us like that. Thank you...
Read moreWhere I'm from In New Orleans, “neighborhood restaurant” is a genre widely understood to meet expectations of affordability and informality, with a strain of vernacular cuisine headlined by red beans, gumbo and Gulf seafood po’ boys. Here in Worcester, MA I've found the real deal, the closest thing to my hometown's many neighborhood bar/restaurant. Here some speciality include Baked Stuffed Haddock w/seafood stuffing & Hollandaise Sauce for $17.95, a Fisherman’s Platter (baked or fried) for $23.95 or Grilled Salmon (Plain, Honey Mustard or Dill Sauce) w/pilaf & veg for $18.95. Been around for over 50 years, this unpretentious and casual restaurant serves up some mighty good fixin's and a strong drink. SATURDAYS THEY HAVE A GREAT LOOKING PRIME RIB TOO. They have a daily specials menu and I happened to be here on a Thursday when it was the only night they offer fried Chicken, one of my southern favorites. It was lightly breaded, pipin' hot and not at all greasy. French fries and cole slaw came with it although you could get mashed potatoes and vegs too. Coleslaw was spiced just right with a hint of sugar without being drowned in mayonnaise. Waitress was nice and efficient, the folks at the next table told me to be sure to come back for their...
Read moreHerbies is a long-time Worcester gem. The fisherman's platter is amongst the best dinner deals around, and is my personal favorite. The ambiance is local Worcester with equal numbers of diners and drinkers creating a congenial hubbub. Keno players rub shoulders with sports watchers, diners, and casual drinkers. The staff is warm and friendly and stand ever ready to bring another beverage or additional condiments or anything else required. The fisherman's platter is to die for...piled high with a big fish filet, mounds of clams, shrimp, and scallops over a pile of French fries, and served with an excellent cole slaw, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. It is so large that my lady and I eat till we're fit to burst and still have enough to bring back a large meal to Jim, our disabled friend and roommate. Herbies also serves a full menu of other seafood offerings as well as traditional comfort foods, and the bar offers a huge variety of cocktails and beers...my Lady particularly likes the raspberry margaritas. The prices are quite reasonable too. Go discover what the locals already know...that Herbies is a great local place to enjoy good company, great food, and ice cold beverages at a...
