Muddy Ranking #19: Oliver’s and Plancks Tavern, Yarmouth MA

Wanted to give a bit of an overdue shoutout to Oliver's & Planck's Tavern in Yarmouthport. We enjoy the Cape every year and, probably like so many people, find ourselves going back to the same places over and over again. We've made it a goal coming out of Covid that we'd do our best to branch out and try new places. Thanks to this group, we landed on what may be our new favorite restaurant. Driving up to Oliver's & Planck's we were happy to see a good amount of parking and a very light and nautical themed restaurant when we entered. I especially loved that they had dining tables in the front part of the restaurant, then the bar and more tables in the back. This allowed for us to have a quiet dinner when one of the nights we went happened to be on trivia night. What a great way to cater to two different dining experiences at the same time. The menu has great options at very well appreciated prices. Of course, we started with the chowder and it was a perfect balance of potatoes and clams while being creamy and not too overpowering of any one flavor. I was craving a steak but don't like when it comes out too black from char, and our waitress was extremely accommodating to that request. It was perfectly cooked and had great flavor and the red mashed potatoes were a great side and a nice change of pace from fries. My mom ordered the broiled scallops and loved them so much she would have probably licked the bowl if that was socially acceptable in public. They were buttery, the crumb topping had great seasoning too it that had a nice flavor and the serving size of potatoes was very generous. The meal came with bread and I added a, pretty strong, vodka lemonade drink that was on their menu to the meal. We were so impressed that, a few days later when we were contemplating adding a day on to our trip, coming back here was a reason we decided to! The second night I had to go with the same steak. Once again our waiter, different this time but no less accommodating, made sure it was perfectly cooked. I went for the fries this time and they were an equally delicious side, you can't go wrong with any form of potato that you want with your meal. My mom switched it up, barely, by going with the fried scallops instead of broiled. She couldn't believe how fresh they tasted and how the breading didn't over power the scallop. The baked potato was good too and if really pressed about it, she seems to say she would go for the broiled on the next trip, but it seems like you can't go wrong with any scallops served here. Once again we went with the chowder and pink vodka lemonade and once again it was very strong drink. A highlight again was the rolls, they are so good! Overall, we are so excited about this restaurant and are happy to have had two great meals here on our first two visits.

Every facet of the experience at Oliver's was fantastic! The waitress was suburb at her job. The hot food was hot and the cold food cold. I'd credit the waitress and chef working together on that. We were never left wondering where the waitress was. She was attentive without hovering. I had the fish and chips plate. It may be the best I've ever had. It was a long and thick, fresh fillet. The breading was light and did not affect the fish flavor or texture. It was cooked flakey and moist. The tarter sauce was a nice complement with great flavor. To put this review in context, I'm a native Cape Codder who loves seafood. The tavern is large enough that the bar can be roudy, while the booths were quiet. The lighting was bright enough to read menus while low enough for atmosphere.

As out of Towners enjoying a few days on Cape Cod, we were looking for a local tavern to watch “Monday Night Football”. Our plan was to sit at a good bar, have drinks, watch the game of Bills VS Jets, and have some appetizers as the night went on. There was really no one at this large bar area except for my husband & I and 2 ladies a few seats down. We ordered our drinks and as game time approached we asked the bartender if the sound could come on for the game. We weren’t asking to blast it. Just turn it up a bit so we could hear. He told us No, they only turn the sound on for “Patriot Games because this is a progressive Patriot bar”. Whatever that is supposed to mean. 🤷🏻‍♀️. The Patriots weren’t playing, they played the day before, and this was Monday Night Football. We travel a lot, and always find a local bar to watch football when our team is playing, and always for Monday night football regardless who is playing. Establishments have always been gracious, and even if it’s on their smaller screen they turn on the game. We always are sure to order and create a bill and always leave an extra generous tip. This place took us by surprise. I would think in a tourist area you want to have customers regardless who they root for. And besides again, the bar area was empty and the home team wasn’t playing. I fully understand if the local team is playing, that’s your priority game. They weren’t playing and there wasn’t anyone else at that bar. So we politely asked for the check and left. Went back to our hotel and enjoyed watching the game there. So out of towners, don’t expect a welcome if you want to enjoy a good football game and your not a local team fan. You can watch but you cannot listen. Poor customer service. Poor...

This review is solely on service. We went with a party of 7 and were seated at the smallest tables in the business. We got there and were seated at 6:45 PM, we did not receive our food until 8:37 PM. We didn’t get any water for over 25 minutes after being seated. It wasn’t until an hour after being seated that the server even brought us bread….and it was 4 pieces for a table of 7. She kept saying how busy it was but it seemed like every other server was doing just fine. A father and daughter came in 30 minutes after us and after we had placed our order and they got their food before we even received our appetizer ( which was stale cold nachos). The two were seated, received their food and left before we even got our appetizer. It was terrible service and the server was swearing as she was walking by us and telling us that the establishment had not cups or plates and that’s why it was taking so long. 2 hours just for food is insane especially when everyone else was receiving their food in an appropriate timing. You’d think when you have a group of 7 knowing that we’re spending 300+ you’d come to check on our table more than 3 times to at least make sure we have something to drink and have plates. The food ONCE it came out was great but the service was terrible...
