I really, really wanted to like this place. My experience was terrible.
The backyard lot had a very large pothole. Walking in feels like entering someone's living room. Usually this is a sign a place is great. And all recent reviews are saying good things. I'm not sensing any red flags yet.
I ring the little bell, and the only guy in the back comes forward and greets me. Meatloaf dinner ordered without issue, but they no longer serve waffles for chicken and waffles. I opt for just the chicken strip meal instead, although the main reason I wanted to try this place was the chicken and waffles. I placed my order at 4:20pm. I am told 35-45 mins wait time. That's fine by me, I drop some things off at home and come back at 5pm. There's now a rush of people for dinner, and orders leaving, so I'm still hopeful. I proceed to sit for another 50 minutes. I'm now late for a doctor appointment I was supposed to attend at 5:30pm.
At 5:45pm, the guy who took my order tells me they don't have enough mac and cheese to put on my dinner plate, and I hear him tell someone else in the back to pull the sweet potato fries.
I had given the guy a solid $8 and change in tip, and waited for well over an hour. The guy looked guilty as all hell as he handed me my bag. He tried to make an effort to apologize by giving me a couple 'treat cups' for free. But I think he knew what he just handed me was not something he could even be proud of serving.
I get home, and the meatloaf is grey and flavorless. The sweet potato fries are all raw. The baked beans are something we could have made from a Bush's Sidekicks' can with red and green peppers added. The chicken strips are literally the same kind I have stocked cheap and tasteless dive bars with. The apology 'treat cups' are simply Cool Whip with Oreo crumbles. I spent $40 on two dinner meals and $8 in tips on a very lackluster experience.
I give two stars instead of one because I could read the pain on the guys face when he handed me my order. I could tell he was ashamed of what he just produced.
I really wanted to like this place and make it my new dinner destination. I'm happy to see they don't need my support. Plenty of others are having a great experience here, but that was not...
Read morei drove about 45 minutes to an hour to try this place & let me tell you... it was not IT. disappointed was an understatement. i know many people's soul food are different from one another, but i did not know it was possible to make soul food that lacked so much.. soul. there was NO soul in that food. the only thing that was decent were the pork-chops if you look over the fact some of it was so salty i was one bite away from the hospital because that spiked my blood pressure up for sure! the greens? yeah.. i know that was canned because there is no way fresh greens will ever taste like that even if a 2 year old made them. the yams were not good. it tasted like it had too much cinnamon on it & the texture was like mashed & puréed baby food. the "mac & cheese" was also not hittin' how it should've at all. i should've known because it's called "mac & cheesy" & when it didn't have the nice baked crust on it. so the crustless mac & cheese was very disappointing. the chicken wings were just okay, but who wants to wait over an hour & spend some big change on just okay? also the shrimp definitely needed to be cleaned better. it was like they went fishing that morning & just threw the shrimp in the skillet after taking the shell off. wayy too much poop left inside of the shrimp. last but not least the kool-aid was very watered down. it was giving very much water into wine but jesus had some other business to take care of & left in the process. i'm definitely going to just stick with what i know from now on when it comes to soul food & go to the places where i can see the food cooked through the glass. soul food is not something to play around with & mess about because it's an age-old comfort food meant to rejuvenate the soul, but instead of rejuvenating my soul, it took a piece of it. the worst soul food i've...
Read moreI drove by this place recently and thought- *make a point to try this place out!, and fortunately, today was the day. I’m glad they are open on Mondays, when so many other restaurants are not. We got there right before close and the owner was generous to accommodate our dinner order, to-go.
I got the catfish, which I honestly started to rethink- (will it taste like a freezer? Overly fishy taste?) but hey, no risk, no reward. I went with it, and was rewarded handsomely. It was DELICIOUS, and perfect; 2 larger size, thin cut filets dusted in cornbread and fried to heavenly perfection. Accompany my filets were black eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread. There are a plethora of options for sides, I was pleased with my picks, even though the collards were a bit over-salted in my opinion. It was the end of the day, plus often a matter of opinion, but that’s my humble feedback. The black-eyed-peas were flavorful, creamy almost in flavor, and balanced the sharpness and delightful bitterness of the collard greens (turnip greens in the mix).
Will I back? Heck yeah! Can’t wait to experience more of the menu!
Please note this is not a fast or “food hot and ready to go” kind of place- worth the wait but don’t come in a hurry! The wait was not unreasonable,...
