An izakaya is a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks. Izakaya are casual places for after-work drinking, similar to a British or Irish pub, a Spanish tapas bar, or an American saloon or tavern.
Unfortunately, I would say that Zan doesn’t qualify as such. It’s more of a sushi restaurant with some other dishes like the Japanese savory pancake, okonomiyaki お好み焼き, as a complement. (-1 point)
Liquor choices are similarly sparse where the recommendation was for hot sake. Cheaper sake is often warmed to disguise its low grade, and premium sake is served chilled. (-1 point)
Hakkaisan can be decent if stored properly, 5°C. Sadly, good luck with that in Vietnam.
I would say during winter time it’s acceptable to warm 日本酒 and serve food such as Chawanmushi チャワンムシ, Deep-fried pork cutlet over rice, katsu don カツ丼, ten don 天丼, etc.
All aside, Haiphong’s food options are limited at best. This is an attempt to feed the locals.
