I recently had dinner at Mozambiq in Bulawayo, and my experience was unfortunately a mixed one. The restaurant itself has a nice setting with a relaxed atmosphere, which initially set the tone for what I hoped would be a good evening. However, once the food and service came into play, things did not quite live up to expectations.

The menu looked appealing on paper, but when the dishes arrived, the execution fell short. The flavors were rather bland, and the meals lacked the freshness and richness one would associate with Mozambican-inspired cuisine. Portions were fair, but the taste just wasn’t memorable, which left me feeling underwhelmed.

Service was another area that could use improvement. While the staff were generally polite, they were not particularly attentive. It often felt like we had to wait longer than necessary for orders to be taken and for follow-ups such as drinks or condiments. There was a sense of indifference, which made the overall dining experience feel less welcoming than it should have been.

In summary, Mozambiq Bulawayo has potential given its atmosphere and concept, but the food quality and service both need significant improvement. At the moment, it feels more like a missed opportunity than a place I would be eager to return to. With a little more care in the kitchen and better attentiveness from the staff, this could be a great spot in Bulawayo’s dining scene – but as it stands, it was a rather...

UPDATED REVIEW: PREVIOUS: A great evening. Our waitress Busi was great. She got everything just right for us and was so helpful . Really appreciate such a good night. our first visit and will definitly be coming back

SECOND VISIT: we were excited to make a return to Mozambik after a great first visit. We went Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) so did many other people including two large birthday parties.

So it great that the restaurant is so popular - and looking around people really seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Unfortunately it took around 30 mins just to place the order - which was not really an issue - we were not in a rush

we ordered drinks - starters and mains

Unfortunately the mains arrived before the starters - but that wasn't a problem, as the mains were cold and had to be returned.

our starters then turned up - followed by the replacement meals minus the chips. the curries tasted great and pleased we had a second chance at eating them.

the bill came, including the cost of the chips - we asked for the price to be removed but said that might be difficult and would have to get permission.

I'm sure if I'd spoken with someone it would have been sorted.

So overall, a disappointing second visit. The food did eventually taste great. I'm sure the chips are equally good - perhaps we'll find out next time - but maybe next time not at a weekend

hope I've been fair. as having Mozambik in Bulawayo is...

The warm welcome, soft African music in the background, and the buzz and bustle of a busy restaurant. I enjoyed the mellow ambience indoors. Lawrence, our waiter was attentive, lively and helpful with the recommendations. We didn't have a long wait between ordering and receiving our meals. The presentation didn't disappoint and what a change from the boring plain crockery. The complimentary peanuts are given as you get your drink orders.

We ordered the steaks, I enjoyed the creamy sauces, tender though a bit too salty for my taste buds. The salad had fresh crunchy ingredients. I was satisfied.

As a dessert girl, that chocolate volcano! Blew me away, rich but not overwhelming. Tasted the double decker, the passionate lemon cheese cake and malva pudding. My dessert topped them all.

Night cap anyone? Irish coffee and Dom Pedro. The blend of coffee was aromatic and smooth. I had to ask what it was. Kimbo coffee. I guess I'll be back for some coffee.

The kids where playing in the indoor playroom with the option of playing outdoors. Ideal for the chilled afternoon time with family.

Overall, I'm happy with the experience and they've stolen my heart for...

From the moment we stepped into Mozambik, it felt like we were walking into a coastal dream, a fusion of colour, flavour, and soul. The ambiance is absolutely magnetic, with stunning decor, rich aromas and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer. We ordered the creamy garlic prawns, grilled chicken, fluffy rice, and velvety mashed potatoes—each bite was a celebration of taste! Everything was fresh, rich in flavour, and beautifully plated. The spinach side? Absolutely divine. A special shoutout to Corene, our waitress, whose warm smile and heartfelt hospitality elevated the entire experience. She served us with such joy and ease, it felt like being welcomed into someone’s home. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a delicious meal, vibrant culture, and true hospitality. Thank you so much for this marvelous experience.

The food, service and atmosphere are excellent. Though I was kinda put off my their no substitutions rule (almost left, actually). This rule seems to be predicated upon that everyone eats pork and seafood. My friend and I don't. We wanted to order their platters, as that way you get to sample at least 3 meats. All their platters have seafood or pork, or both. For instance, the platter we each wanted has pork, beef sausage and chicken. We'd wanted to substitute the pork for beef, and they said strictly no substitutions. The day was saved by the manager on duty, Bryn, who suggested we order a steak + half chicken, which we then split. The food itself is scrumptious 😋. I'll probably go back, though their no substitutions rule is really off-putting
