Had a fantastic time visiting this historical ship. Arguably the most famous luxury ship of its time to ply the route connecting Yokohama, Japan to Seattle, United States. Was truly enamored by the colorful history of the ship - from a high end luxury ship sailing across the seven seas to being conscripted into the military services carrying and tending wounded soldiers. And spending its retirement days in the dock of Yokohama as a floating restaurant and event venue. A visit to the ship lets you view the various sections of the ship from during its heydays. From the high end dining areas, accommodations of guests and crews, the engine room to the bridge of the ship, everything was well kept and maintained. You could stroll along the deck of the ship or climb up to the bridge to have some beautiful views of the Yokohama dock and surrounding area. There is a gallery portraying the chronological events and key moments of the ship as well as heart felt notes left by people whose lives have crossed path with the ship in one way or another.

The Hikawa Maru was a 10,000-tonne class cargo and passenger ship built at the Yokohama Dockyard (now the Yokohama Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) and operated as a hospital ship during the Pacific War. After the war, she continued to operate on the North Pacific route until 1960. After the war, she was moored in front of Yamashita Park in Yokohama (Port of Yokohama). As the only surviving Japanese cargo ship from the pre-war period and a valuable industrial heritage asset, including the ship's interior, she was designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Yokohama City in 2003 (Heisei 15), a Heritage of Industrial Modernisation by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2007 (Heisei 19), and a National Important Cultural Property in August 2016 (Heisei 28). Designated as an important cultural property (historical material) by the national government in August 2016 (2016).

On our first trip to Japan in 1956, my family traveled on the Hikawamaru. I include a picture of my mother, Katherine Crouch with my brothers and me on the deck next to a life preserver with the vessel's name partially visible. Also images from the manifest. My father, Marshall Crouch, came as a Fulbright professor (room 215). My mother, my brothers and I were in room 211. (at the bottom of the First Class listing). I have since visited the ship in Yokohama where it is docked as a museum. (ticket scan included) The Japanese animation artist 東京幻想 Tokyo Genso had a show recently at Tsutaya Books (2023) in the Ginza Six building. His latest catalogue is かつて東京と呼ばれた場所へ What Happened in Tokyo!? The works imagine a post apocalyptic Tokyo and include the Hikawa Maru in Yokohama.

“The Hikawa Maru is a museum ship which is permanently docked beside Yamashita Park in Yokohama. Built in 1929, this luxury ocean liner carried passengers across the Pacific Ocean. Among the ship’s more prominent passengers were Charlie Chaplin in 1932.” The above info is copied from the website. Although the cruise is old. But the classical decorations are still wonderful to watch. Standing or sitting at the deck looking out the Pacific Ocean is a relaxing experience. After and before the visits, you could walk along the China Town and the great waterfront nearby.

Hikawa Maru (氷川丸) is a Japanese ocean liner that Yokohama Dock Company built for Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Kaisha ("NYK Line"). She was launched on 30 September 1929 and made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Seattle on 13 May 1930.[1] She is permanently berthed as a museum ship at Yamashita Park, Naka-ku, Yokohama. Hikawa Maru was one of three Hikawa Maru-class motor ships,[1][2] all named after major Shinto shrines. The Hikawa Shrine is in Saitama in central Honshu. Her two sister ships, both lost in the Second World War, were Heian Maru and Hie Maru.
