Suzaku Mon — Attraction in Yokohama

Suzaku Mon, also known as the South Gate of Yokohama Chinatown, is one of the four main traditional gates marking the entrances to Japan’s largest Chinatown. The current gate was completed in March 1995, replacing the original structure built in 1976. It stands 8 meters wide and 13.6 meters high, constructed from reinforced concrete with a decorative finish in vivid red, gold, and blue.

The design follows the architectural style of the Qing dynasty, with two tall pillars symbolizing heaven and earth. Its brilliant red color represents fire and corresponds to the south in Chinese cosmology, based on the Five Elements (Wu Xing) theory. The gate is associated with Suzaku, the Vermilion Bird — one of the Four Celestial Guardians — who protects the south and symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and good fortune.
