10 Least Crowded Beach Campgrounds on the East Coast π 1. Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland/Virginia 2. Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware 3. Myrtle Beach State Park, South Carolina 4. Anastasia State Park, Florida 5. Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina 6. Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina 7. Grayton Beach State Park, Florida 8. Bahia Honda State Park, Florida 9. Sebastian Inlet State Park, Florida 10. Croatan National Forest, North Carolina Will they be empty? No. It IS one of the busiest weekends of the year, but theyβll definitely be less crowded. Less traffic, less people, that means more time enjoying the beach, win. . . What are you up to this weekend? Bonus tip! Find a 4WD beach if you have a vehicle that can handle it. I finally got rid of my minivan for an AWD SUV and being able to drive in the beach is AMAZING! No more worrying about parking and lugging around all my stuff. Plus 4WD beaches will typically be less crowded and are dog friendly. βββββββββββββββββββββββ We Chose Adventures is an outdoor family that downsized to prioritize family adventures. Visited in March 2021 for kids spring break. It was a nice day, sunny and cool 60s. We think it was early enough in the year that we maybe saw less than 5 flying insects the whole time we were there. We spent about 3 hours in the park. We went right when the park opened and had no problems pulling up to the gate. There was a problem where the gate employee overcharged us. When I confronted her, she apologized and proceeded to charge me the correct amount. She "thought" she refunded the original charge and just told me to keep the receipt and wrote "credit" on it just in case. I had very little confidence in her at that point. The charge posted to my CC 3 days later and no signs of the "refund". I'll probably have to dispute this with my CC company. By the time we left around 1PM, the line to get into the park was very very long at least 20 cars deep. Beach: We did not go into the water as it was quite cold still. There was plenty of parking when we arrived and we did walk up and down the beach a little bit near the pier. We found some interesting wild life (star fishes) and the kids had fun just running around on the sand for 15 minutes. The beach was clean. Pier: We walked through the shop to get to the pier. Masks signs are listed everywhere but patrons wearing masks was hit or miss and we didn't see any employees asking them to put masks on in the 10 minutes we were shopping in there. As I walked up to the cashier to pay the one cashier proceeded to put her mask on as she walked up to the counter to help me check out. The store itself was nice and had a good assortment of gift shop like items and fishing gear. It was well stocked and of course all my kids had to walk away with something. The pier itself was also very nice and wide so even with a good number of people it was easy to stay 6-ft apart. At least at like 10-11AM. We did the pier scavenger hunt while we were there and all the signs were easy to find. There was only one that was missing that look like it had recently fallen off. We walked all the way to the end and back and it took maybe 15 minutes and that's with the kids scavenger hunting. Trails: we hiked the two major trails, Sculptured Oak trail and Yaupon trail. We were doing the park scavenger hunts while hiking and everything was in order and easy to find. Look liked there were a few pavilions that you could rent. We think someone was having some kind of wedding/reception at the far one near the Yaupon trail head. We then walked all the way back to the pier and did the rest of the trails later in the day from the Nature Center. The bathrooms at both trail heads near the beach were actually really nice for a state park. There was a lot of ventilation and wasn't stuffy at all. Bikes allowed on the trails and in some spots it got a little tight. There were also a few very muddy spots to cross. Overall the trails are well kept. I would take my cub scouts on them without a second thought. Nature Center: Had it's own parking area. The walking path leading up to it from the parking lot ends at the campgrounds. The nature center itself was very nice. A number live animal displays and other neat artifacts. The kids really liked it and the lady who was running it was also very knowledgeable and interactive with the kids. She helped us with the scavenger hunts. We hiked the rest of the Sculptured Oak trail from the Nature Center parking area and out to the pond and then back. One thing they don't tell you is that for completing 3 scavenger hunts you only get 1 patch regardless of how many children you have with you. It was suggested that if we made a small donation like $5 to the park she would be able to give us additional patches for our other 2 kids. After the mix up at the gate we were reluctant to "donate" anymore to the park. The staffer at the Nature Center had her mask on at all times but there were patrons who came in without masks on and the staff did not request that they put on masks. Overall the state park was great but we think Huntington Beach State Park was nicer and less crowded.

My family and I are on the quest to visit all of the 47 State Parks. This was our seventh, first of which we visited with a beach. It's a beautiful park, we enjoyed the area. We camped (in the month of June) here since we had the opportunity. Here are our pros and cons about the park: Pros: - The beach was easy to access - The beach was not overly populated with people and was kept cleaned - The Park was well taken care of - Plenty of spots to picnic if you're only there for the day or camping - Plenty of camping sites. - Multiple playground areas rather you're there for the day or if you're camping. If you're staying at the park and you have kids that like playgrounds one of the best campsites to have is around 81-87 or around 163. There is also a bathroom right near the playground - Great convince store located at the beginning of the camp site entrance. They have some food essentials, souvenirs, treats, toys and more. - Pleanty of parking, rather you're there for the day or camping. If you're there camping and brought more than 2 cars there's a parking lot right outside the area where you camp. It's still within the park and walking distance from the campsites. - Family friendly place - If you're camping for more than a weekend there are a lot of kid activities with the Park Rangers. - Pleanty of bathrooms rather you're staying for the day or camping - There is a covered picnic area if you want a party area with shade - Lots of trees around for all you hammock lovers. We had ours out which made it nice to enjoy. - There is a paved road to tavel on when finding your campsites - They are pretty strict about no alcohol at the Park especially at the campsites. - Well protected, we felt safe while we were there. - If you don't want to cook at your campsite they have your typical standup grills around the Park. -Nature trails to walk on - Adult bicycles rentals, not sure about bike rentals for kids. We didn't rent any but saw others riding rented bikes. Cons: - We camped at site 196-198 which is off the main road and a lot of camp traffic passed by. I would not suggest these campsites if you have young kids you constantly have to watch (I had my 4 and 2 year olds out there). There is a lot of traffic (cars coming into the campsite) that passes by, so at night if you're a lite sleeper you may not sleep well. - There is a near by airport, you constantly hear air planes flying over even during late at night and early in the morning. - Mosquitos we're pretty bad out there so make sure to take lots of bug spray. - With the campsite being near the beach, where we were there was hardly any breeze which made out for an even hotter day. - Most campsites have lots of shade (like ours did) it was great to have but since it rained it took longer for the area to dry up from the rain shower. - Our campsites seemed pretty small, definitely not big enough for a good size camper. Make sure to check measurements of the campsite if you have a camper. You could fit 2 tents on there but it might be a tight fit. - The night we got there it rained pretty bad and had flooded a bit but after it stopped the rain washed away pretty quick and the flooding went away. - While on the beach we put out a shade for our kids, it was one that looks like a tent to some but it was the type that had an open screened back and a cover over the top so the front was all opened. According to the lifeguards those are not allowed, only umbrellas and small baby tents (not sure how small they consider small). Best bet would be to bring the umbrella. - If you need to cancel keep in mind you get a small amount back. The camping charges are not refunded. We had to cancel a three night camp site and only got $30 back from the $90 we were originally charged. - There was lots of poison ivy around the area so be aware. - If you can't take heat and South Carolina humidity I would not suggest camping in a tent during the summer.

My review contains the good and bad about our experience and the site we stayed at (152). We camped near the Nature Center in a tent for 10 days during and slightly after the MBBW 2022 Spring Rally. We loved the park and campground itself and already planning our next visit. Most of the staff were welcoming and friendly. The park itself has access to the beach and also has a pier you can walk on for free and fish on for a small fee. Campers have access to restrooms, showers, and the laundromat of the campground. Very close to the airport, but we loved seeing and hearing the planes take off every couple minutes to hours. There are also some curious wildlife in the park, including some raccoons (as you can see, they were curious about the bread in our tent at one point [we did not feed any animals nor leave them any food]) There is also a small store with some essentials (except allergy medicine lol, which we had to go get from Walmart due to the pollen). Now the bad. I really dont want to deter you from visiting here, because it is a wonderful park and campground. But try your best to stay away from sites near the Nature Trail or Nature Center: these areas have heavy foot and bike traffic and we were constantly hearing peoples conversations on the trail, the yells and screams of kids in the woods, and people were constantly gathering in front of our site as if we werent even there. I mentioned above that MOST of the staff were friendly and kind. The woman with yellow-white hair who cleans the restrooms near the Ranger station and the older gentleman with white hair and glasses that cleans the sites during check out were so, so rude, and I will call in about them when we make it home. The lady would get frustrated when she would come in at PEAK hours of people taking showers or using the restroom (for the first time in the morning) and demand they hurry up and "get out", as I heard her mumble and speak MANY times. She even had the audacity to roll her eyes at someone in front of me and then look at me for validation for them asking if they could use the restroom before she had even brought her cleaning supplies in. I had my own bad experience w/ her when I asked her where another restroom was located when she was cleaning the restroom near the ranger station (had just gotten there and didnt know the layout of the campground) and she swatted her hand at me, gave me a nasty look, and said "Go look in the circles, I dont know what to tell you." Very rude and unhelpful. Every time I saw her, she emitted the sense that she absolutely hates that place. The man I dealt with was pushy and very annoyed that he even had to speak to us. We had a trailer for our motorcycle that my boyfriend was taking to the parking lot (we still had 30 mins before checkout) and he pulls up and tells me to "hurry it up and check out" because it's almost 12. I told him he would be right back (he came back on our bike 20 seconds after the guy left) and he rolled his eyes and told me the time in a condescending way. I replied we'd be leaving soon (again, still had 30 minutes) and he told me he'd be back to check in a few minutes to "make sure I was gone". Besides those two sourpusses (which I hope you dont have to encounter while there), our time was great, but we would definitely pick a spot away from the Nature Center if you dont want to constantly hear talking, yelling, or foot traffic. Campground might want to hire friendlier cleaning staff. Nice campground, and look forward to coming back.
