It is the oldest museum in Algeria. It covers the history of art in Algeria for 2,500 years. Inaugurated in 1897, it is located within the grounds of Liberty Park (ex-Galland Park) in Algiers, includes two sections: a section of Classical Antiquity and includes sculptures, mosaics and bronzes discovered on the archaeological sites of the country; a section of Art from the Muslim West (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain) and the Near East which was added to the initial fund, and consisting mainly of manuscripts, a collection of coins, carpets and embroidery, ceramics .... Ancient Museum: The portico of the museum recalls, through its ornamentation, the doors to the Western Maghreb. In the vestibule, a mosaic wall facing, coming from a Christian basilica Bordj El Bahri (Cap Matifou). The exhibition halls are arranged around a courtyard, the floor of which is paved with two Roman mosaics. Under the galleries, Arab and Turkish commemorative and funeral inscriptions. On the walls of Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Tunisian tiles dating from the...

The collections in this underrated museum rival those of most museums in Europe. I’m giving it five stars, though more detailed explanations would’ve been appreciated at least for the Roman exhibits. There is also not much information in English, so you’ll get more out of the experience if you know French. For 200 DA you actually get two museums for the price of one, as the Islamic and Roman exhibitions are housed in two separate buildings. The ticket office (caisse) is also in its own small separate place directly from the entrance.

The museum has preserved plenty of Sculptures and artifacts that range from the Roman empire, all the way to the Golden Age of Islam. The museum is well kept and clean, has beautiful water fountains, islamic calligraphy, and Pre revolutionary buildings. Make sure to have a French or Arabic translator as none of the artifact descriptions are written in English. The building is near public Transit as well.

The museum is an excellent place to learn about part of the era of the Islamic countries that ruled in Algeria and North Africa. You can see educational tools and Qur’anic manuscripts, war tools and military clothing, old clothes and accessories for decoration, coins used by the population in several Islamic eras and coinage tools. The place is worth a visit.
