Caminito — Attraction in Autonomous City of Buenos Aires

As a foreigner who once lived in Buenos Aires for a few years, I never really understood the attraction of Caminito as the “classic Buenos Aires”. Very tacky and touristy. I am not sure if there is even a museum or place to explain why the buildings are all coloured like that. HOWEVER, La Boca is an essential part of the Buenos Aires story as it is the port and the entry point to so much of Argentina’s history. In order to understand a little bit more about the port life and its role, it is worth walking further down the street to the Quinquela museum which gives an interesting insight into the painters and artists who lived in La Boca. It also gives some background and atmosphere to the role of La Boca in the past. And actually, maybe La Boca always was a place where people were trying their luck and trying to survive. If you are visiting Buenos Aires, then a visit here is probably a must because of the coloured buildings of the past. Also worth seeing is the PROA art space and the costume warehouse of the Colón Opera which are both located within walking distance...

If you are coming to Buenos Aires, this is a nice place for visit. Eye-catching, the houses and streets with very intense colors and dynamic changes make this place different and special.

La Boca is the old port neighborhood through which, between 1870-1930, 6 million European immigrants arrived to Argentina. Because the settlers could not afford paint for their houses, they used the leftover paint that was used to paint the ships in the dock.

During the day you can find a bunch of tourists here, so it is quite difficult to walk and enjoy, but still safe enough. However, at night, this is a different story. Like the whole city, this place transforms too. You can see the view of the place more clearly, but there is no more safety. I have heard similar experiences and the same warnings from every driver I took - Please, be careful!
