Nature and Nature-Photography Lovers within reach paradise.
Before I spent time at the Palmetum, I did not know there was a difference between the White Ibis and your average Bin Chicken, aka Brissy Dumpster Duck.
The White Ibis in residence, much like the other resident fowl and marsupials, remain shy around humans, though are not above surrounding you from the canopy in what I can only describe as an homage to Alfred Hitchcock.
The footpaths are generous and sturdy enough to allow a modest work truck mobility, so Granny's wheelchair and Junior's stroller should have little-to-no problem.
Resting opportunities and quiet is plentiful - as are the mozzies, so remember to spray your skin prior to entry.
While the wallabies - two species in residence - are not going to let you approach them, they are not averse to showing you their full three feet in height should you present yourself as a problem, though if you sit quietly on one of the many off-track seating opportunities, they might suss you out as they travel past you from point-A to point-B.
Try to capture the privilege on your phone for future accuracy of recall and braggable photography.
Photography opportunities are also plentiful.
The Palmetum is a good training ground for any budding outdoors photographer - birds, bugs, botanicals, and many other subjects for someone to hone their camera-eye and shutter-skills.
This is the atmosphere for couples wanting that Tropical Queensland couple's-portrait.
And, speaking of couples, as I'm typing this a couple of scrub turkeys have just shot by, seemingly off for some canoodling
This area is truly paradise...
Read moreBest of the botanical gardens in Townsville. The bats are now gone.
It's a very picturesque green space located near the hospital, university and very close to the aged care homes. Also has tea rooms adjacent to the car park. There are shady areas, and open sunny areas. It gives you the choice to enjoy a rainforest walk, or open grassy areas, both of which are very large and lack other visitors for the better. The shady area is dark and the sunny area is bright. Talk a walk through both if you got the time
Many formal photos have been taken at the Palmetum. It's one of the three botanical gardens in Townsville. It's never usually crowded, and much emptier during during dawn or dusk when people are out exercising. Only noise is from the traffic in the distance, which isn't that bad when you're in the rainforest. Sun protection is recommended for...
Read morevisit on 9 March 2024, very nice place to relax. The very sad part is the four Muscovy ducks that were left wondering in this park, they are very hungry, thin, and have no protection from predators. Seem to be that they were dump there by someone who no longer has interest in these birds; these birds are domesticated so they need people to feed them to survive. Left a msg on the council website contact, but no response. we would very much like to add these four to our duck flock as pets. these birds need clean drinking water, food, and protection from predators. The ratio of 3 males to the one female is very bad for the female as she's over-sex as can tell no feather on her head and neck. They are too friendly to survive as wild birds. please let us know if we can pickup them to jon our flock in our big property. our contact is xyooj96 at...
