Very quiet beach, mainly due to the access, either down a long series of stairs with inclined paths between or down a steep concrete driveway. The beach is not patrolled by life guards, so take care if you want to surf. There is a large rock shelf separated from the brunt of the waves by a slightly higher rock platform but still has flowing water due to waves breaking over the platform. The shelf however is well separated from the immediate force of the waves, except in extreme storm conditions. Depth on the shelf seems to vary from ankle deep up to about 30-40 centimetres & appears to have a thin layer of sand in most parts, so that part is good for toddlers, children, & those who are not confident they can handle the surf. From the high tide mark the beach angles down into the water quite steeply & results in the wave action being quite vigorous at times, especially when the swell is coming from the south as the beach faces south-east. There appears to be substantial kelp & seaweed beds not far off the beach & the beach can be covered with rotting kelp & seaweed after a storm. Oh, I almost forgot. Domestic pets (the sign at the top of the access path shows a silhouette of a dog, so I guess we all know what the local council means) are not permitted on the beach as it's part of a nature reserve. The fine is pretty substantial...
Read moreBateau Bay is easily one of my favorite beaches in the area. It’s often overlooked, which means it remains wonderfully quiet. Its proximity to Wyrrabalong National Park adds a wild, untouched feel to the beach. If you walk south along the expansive rock shelf, you’ll quickly find yourself feeling miles away from everything.
The beach at Bateau Bay is a beautiful mix of golden sands and rocky outcrops, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re a surfer looking for the perfect wave or someone who prefers a quiet spot to unwind with a good book, this beach has you covered. The gentle curve of the bay creates a sheltered area, making it ideal for families with young kids who want to paddle in the shallows or explore the lively rock pools.
For those seeking adventure, the coastal walking tracks are a must. With Wyrrabalong National Park bordering Bateau Bay, the trails wind through native bushland and along cliffs, revealing stunning ocean views. Crackneck Lookout is a local favorite, offering panoramic views of the coastline. It’s especially breathtaking during whale watching season when you might catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures migrating...
Read moreThe easiest way to access the beach is to park at or around the main carpark and go down the ramp/stairs.
The water is reasonably calm due to the bay setup. No life guards though so parents must pay extra attention to their kids.
There are large rock platforms at both the northern end and the southern end. The latter extends all the way to Crackneck Point. On low tide the entire southern section is exposed with large body of shallow water trapped between rocks and beach where schools of young fish find sanctuary from predators. Many live bivalves can also be found in gaps between rocks. Waves coming up the edges create a spectacle.
Overall a great place for family fun...
