The hike to the top is a rewarding challenge, roughly equivalent to about 10,000 steps, so be prepared for a good workout. As you make your way up, you'll pass through varying terrain, from rocky paths to paved roads, all while being treated to stunning views of Townsville's coastal skyline, Magnetic Island, and the Coral Sea.

The climb itself can be strenuous, especially under the tropical sun, so staying hydrated is key. There are no shops or eateries near the lookout, so it's advisable to pack your own food and water for the trip. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with sweeping 360-degree views, perfect for photography, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. At the top, you'll be able to see all of Townsville laid out below, including the bustling Strand, the impressive harbour, and lush green hills surrounding the city. On a clear day, you can even spot the rugged terrain of Magnetic Island off in the distance. Fantastic lookout - a must see especially if you're one of those who "need to be seen". Not really suitable for wheelchairs or physically challenged but things are changing as I type!! Railings and step modification but there is really only one smooth path suitable. Up a large slope full of deep narrow stairs to a picturesque lookout over Townsville towards Magnetic Island (or Maggie as the locals say it). Spectacular - come at sunrise or sunset!! Up again around the Telstra tower an enjoy the view to the west towards the Airport Air Force and the mountains. Really rugged goat track with rocks and steep rough narrow stairs but worth the battle! Limited parking at the top, reasonably clean toilet facilities, water for you and Puppy. Beautiful lookout and some lovely seats under shelter. Great challenging climb for all levels of fitness and a walking track to avoid the danger of cars and crazy pushbikers on the road!! Castle Hill Lookout is easily one of the must-visit spots in Townsville. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking – you get a full panoramic look at the city, coastline, and Magnetic Island. It’s especially stunning at sunrise or sunset, when the colors in the sky make the scenery even more dramatic.

The drive up is smooth, but if you’re into fitness or just enjoy a challenge, the walk up via the Goat Track or other trails is a great experience. It’s well-used by locals, and there’s a nice community feel, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

There are a few lookout points along the top, so there’s plenty of space to take photos or just sit and enjoy the view. Parking can get a bit tight during peak times, but it’s worth the effort.
