Point Ormond Lookout is a quick reward at the northern end of Elwood Beach, rising just high enough to give a sweeping view from the city skyline to the curve of Port Phillip Bay. A short paved path climbs the low bluff, passing banksia shrubs alive with honeyeaters before it reaches a grassy plateau edged by weather-worn timber posts. From the top you can trace St Kilda Pier, watch yachts tacking off Brighton and spot planes banking toward the airport on clear days. Early morning light puts a soft pastel wash over the water while late afternoon brings gold on the sand and silhouettes of the CBD.

A few benches encourage lingering, though most people sprawl on the grass or perch on the edge posts with fish and chips from nearby Acland Street. Cyclists and joggers roll past on the Bay Trail below, so the lookout works well as a pause on a longer coastal outing. The slope is gentle enough for prams, and there is a water fountain plus a shower at the bottom for a quick rinse after a swim.

Parking can tighten on summer weekends, but the 16 tram stops a short walk away and bike racks sit by the path. There is no café on the hill itself; the closest coffee is a five-minute stroll back toward Elwood village. Even without facilities the lookout feels safe and welcoming thanks to steady foot traffic and open sight lines. Bring a jacket if the wind is up and stay for sunset when city lights flicker on behind the palms. Point Ormond offers one of Melbourne’s simplest yet most satisfying...
