Hidden away in a dense inlet along the winding Mt Dandenong Tourist Road is the internationally renowned William Ricketts Sanctuary. The sanctuary is not only one the Dandenong’s more iconic experiences, but one of the most inspiring and tranquil places on the mountain.

A quiet gentleman who had spent much time living with aboriginal communities in central Australia, William Ricketts created the sanctuary as a place for quiet reflection and replenishing the spirit. He believed that all Australians should adopt Aboriginal philosophies, respecting the spirituality of the mother earth and all things in the natural world. Some of his works throughout the grounds also depict his feelings on the takeover and devastation of white man into the natural environment.

Within the sanctuary grounds, there are over 90 different sculptures depicting the aboriginal people engaging with the earth in a pure forest setting. Carved into rocks and tree trunks that dot the paths that flow throughout the property, the themes in his artwork reflect his philosophies of connections with human, nature...

Situated in a ferny glade in the Dandenongs, William Ricketts Sanctuary is a place of beauty and tranquillity, due both to the natural setting and the mystical sculptures half hidden among ferns along the pathways. It is a place for quiet reflection and for contemplation of the essence of the vision of William Ricketts. Many travel across the world to visit this place time and time again. William Ricketts Sanctuary is not suitable for picnics. Nearby picnic areas are availalbe in the Alfred Nicholas Gardens and parts of the Dandenong Ranges National Park. William Ricketts Sanctuary Excellent place to visit. Great art work by William and very well preserved.Have you seen sanctuaries which look exactly like jungles Well, this is a very rarest sanctuary you’ll ever see. The handmade carvings and art displayed by Willian Ricketts has very deep meaning. I really loved the pieces and you’ll love them too. One of the perfect weekend gateway. Yes, you must carry your family along and have a worthy weekend with your loved one’s. A beautiful walk while seeing and praising his art work. They have set up to play movie / documentary about his life, his aspirations and his work. His love for nature and his passion for art is very clear in his work. Its a great place to visit and feel refreshed. If you love art and nature then this is a place to go. There is a cafe across the road and also few other places...

The natural setting for this sanctuary is beautiful - alone, worth the visit. Ricketts himself was clearly an eccentric character who insisted on projecting deep kinship with First Nations Australians - a relationship that is not in any way reciprocated with concrete evidence from Aboriginal peoples. It reeks of cultural appropriation and exploitation. Added to this - from the 1960s, until his death in 1993, the Victorian government used public money to house and maintain Ricketts in his own home, and it is just not clear why this was done. Parks Victoria has the most wonderful staff. Unfortunately I managed to get Ms Rude-Bored as the attending Parks Victoria staff member. It pains me to give a poor google rating but 2 stars is a fair take on my experience today.
