Very disappointing - give it a miss unless your just having a coffee or passing time. This was our first time at Hazelhurst Cafe which is NOT controlled by the council or the Centre.
Terrible on multiple levels:
If you haven't booked told to go outside in the sun on park benches even when there is some space inside (Had to find the unbooked tables and insisted on sitting at them)
Waited over 1 hour to get our meals - a plate of dips and two steak sandwich rolls (10min max to make). No indication given by them that it would take so long - and didn't read the other reviews until waiting for 30 minutes. When queried after 20min were told it will be 5 mins, when queried after 40 min asked at our table what table number are we (no idea that's their job), and what did we order. Noticed at this point the staff in the kitchen very confused and shuffling paper orders everywhere. The manager was very arrogant and dismissive saying "its busy and we are short staffed" (the reviews say this has been a problem for 2-3 years) and went back to the back of the cafe without asking or checking anything. After 45 minutes got someone else's meals and saw puzzled faces in the kitchen, lots of debate and papers being shuffled in there, then the meals got taken outside somewhere. After 50 minutes complained that people served 20min after us were getting their meals - saw more puzzled faces in the kitchen. After 60min the steak sandwiches turned up and had to ask again for the dips which took a further 10 mins.
Expensive, substandard food - This is a "$18 - Fresh baguette w BBQ grass fed steak, caramelised onion, rocket, hand cut chips, rosemary salt & roast garlic aioli" - sloppy, half a dozen chips jammed in a roll with 6 pieces of sliced beef, onions thrown in and out, and a ton of oily sauce dripping out. Not a steak sandwich with chips on the side you would expect with that description. It was probably made in the last 5 minutes after we complained last. I don't know how this is owned by some hot shot chef.
No clue how to run a business. Noticed while waiting the terrible reviews here for 2-3 years yet the response from the "one of the group or owners" was apologetic - "we will meet up at the end of the day and talk about what happened today". Yet this seems to be a long running problem.
Observations are: you queue on one side of the cafe and give them your orders, and they take pieces of paper to the kitchen in a pile and either lose them or mix them up, one "owner / manager" (the arrogant one" just dismisses complaints and just hangs around out the back not supervising or anything, the other apologetic one is trying to patch things up with customers but doesn't know how to fix it all, the kitchen is out of control, and the waitresses are just there to carry food out somewhere and show people that have booked to their tables.
The Gallery and the Council are oblivious...

Read moreWent there last Saturday for breakfast with a small entourage. Was promptly shown an excellent table for six and that ended up being the highlight of our visit. The trouble started when my daughter SERENA HENDERSON (ha) wanted to order a dish for $19 in which 2 ingredients did not comply with her newly acquired vegan diet. When she tried to simply bargain to swap 2 ingredients she was informed that the price was to stay the same but to add her ingredients she had to cough up a $2 per ingredient surcharge so therefore $23 was demanded. "EXCUSE ME " Outstanding customer relations!!! Then my partner MELINDA DODSON (ha) ordered a brushetta for $16 (phew). When it finally arrived each piece would nestle easily in the palm of your hand , smothered in avocado???, and no sign of balsamic vinegar. Obviously some snooty nosed masterchef wannabe thought this sad concoction might vault him into the stratosphere of eloquence.....have another pie in the sky fantasy birdbrain!! Finally i gave 2 stars as the other meals consumed by my son LIAM HENDERSON(ha) and his partner CHERIE (ha) were adequate
Snap out of it.
