This visitor centre has some photos that show the history of North Head. At this centre I booked a spot on the underground guided tour that takes you into the World War II tunnels. The tour guide was very well researched. Our tour took about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The tour starts above ground examining the Japanese attack on Sydney and the various theatres of war that people from Australia have been involved in. The underground infrastructure has been very well preserved by various volunteers. Tours appear to be conducted on Sundays (and Saturdays during summer). They also conduct group tours on weekdays when pre-booked. I travelled to and from this area via a bus which I caught from opposite the Manly ferry wharf. There's a water bubbler located outside this visitor centre. The public toilets are located...
Read moreWell worth the visit! It was suggested by the Manly Visitor Information Centre to go to North Head Sanctuary for spectacular panoramic views of the Ocean and Harbour. I was given clear directions for taking a short bus to the location and was there within 10 minutes. Once I arrived, the paths were marked well, and the walk was pleasant around the Fairfax Track to both of the Lookout locations. The trail is also accessible if need be. The stunning views definitely did not disappoint, and my photos did not do it justice! You will find wild turkeys wandering around, and a sign to watch out for Bandicoots. Walked over to North Fort and wandered around a little. There is a also a small cafe and washrooms nearby the bus stop. Spent about...
Read moreI'm a volunteer gardener up there, so I may be biased. This is a must-see place if you are there. Get a map and find out the other ways to go home. Pro tip: do NOT walk along the road known as Scenic Drive: take the second road to the left after you go under the stone arch. This is North Fort Road, which is much safer, but it's a bit boring. After the parade ground, look for a rough-looking track on the right. After 80 metres, this becomes a steel mesh track, that reveals more wildlife, wildflowers and views, before arriving at the Third Quarantine Cemetery. On weekends, before you take the track, call in at Bandicoot Heaven, directly opposite. On Tuesday and Friday mornings, chat to the Nursery volunteers, who are...
