Oatley Castle stands as a hidden gem in the serene suburb of Oatley. Perched atop Oatley Park, the structure isn’t a castle in the medieval sense but more of a whimsical stone lookout tower. Built in 1935, it captures the imagination of visitors with its fairy-tale charm, rugged sandstone facade, and surrounding bushland. The views from the top of the castle are the real highlight. While modest in height, the tower provides panoramic vistas of the Georges River and surrounding parklands. The serene natural setting enhances the experience, making it a perfect spot for picnics, relaxation, or a peaceful escape from the urban buzz. Oatley Park itself is a treasure trove for nature lovers. With walking trails, native flora and fauna, and picnic areas, the park complements the castle’s allure. Families with children will appreciate the nearby playground, while history enthusiasts will enjoy the castle’s rustic charm and its role in the area’s history. On the downside, the castle is relatively small and doesn’t feature any interior exhibits or historical displays, so the visit is often brief unless combined with exploration of the park. Accessibility might also be an issue for some, as the tower is located at the top of a hill. Pros: Picturesque views of the Georges River. Unique, whimsical architecture. Located in the tranquil and expansive Oatley Park. Cons: Small and lacks interior features or exhibits. Limited signage or historical context provided. Oatley Castle is a charming destination, perfect for a quiet outing or a day in nature. While it may not rival grand castles in Europe, its unique design and stunning surroundings make it a worthwhile visit for locals and tourists alike. Pair it with a stroll through Oatley Park, and you’ve got a delightful day trip.

I didn’t get the chance to walk up to the Oatley Castle due to the fact that it was a good walking trail to see the historical landmark in the early 1900s so it was a good for shelter & picnics as a popular venue tourist attraction. Although this was not my first time being here with the social groups to have a hiking trail along the way to see many views of the waterfalls & people down there on the bridge fishing as well to get a good insight that you can’t play badminton on a steep hill.

Well if your expecting a Castle like structure, you are in for a disappointment. Its a small ordinary looking structure with an unknown date of construction. What you'd really love are the facilities - The electric BBQ, nice seating area, lovely view of Georges rives, kids play area, public toilets and a nice small walk down to have a dip in the Georges river. Can drive down to this place and there is sufficient car parking space.

It's not about the castle itself, but about the park and the walk paths and the BEACH it over looks. I discovered this place when 5 km restrictions hit. I've been coming here for two weeks now, after normally sneaking to Brighton on public transport to swim. I swim all year and love cold water. This beach has nets 330 meters long. I enjoy doing my laps here more than in Brighton Le Sands, where the nets are 120 meters long.

Brighton and other beaches along the ocean line are not murky. Georges River inlets tend to be clean, but murky.

The other caveat if you're going to swim is to download a tides calendar app. When tide is in ebb, water is very shallow....
