On a recent trip, we drove from Adelaide to Port Augusta—a scenic, peaceful journey through the heart of South Australia. After staying the night in Port Augusta, we continued our drive to Whyalla early the next morning. It took just over an hour, and the roads were quiet, making it a smooth and relaxing trip. As soon as we arrived in Whyalla, we had breakfast at a local café near the foreshore—simple but satisfying. The fresh sea breeze and laid-back atmosphere were a refreshing change from city life. After breakfast, we headed straight to the Whyalla Jetty, one of the town’s standout features. The unique circular design of the jetty, stretching out over the clear blue water of the Spencer Gulf, is not only eye-catching but also perfect for a peaceful morning walk. We saw locals fishing and families enjoying the calm surroundings. What surprised us most about Whyalla was the contrast between its industrial background and the natural beauty it offers. The beach area is clean and family-friendly, with safe swimming spots and shady picnic areas. The town also has rich marine life, and in winter, it becomes a global hotspot for cuttlefish migration—a must-see for divers and snorkelers. For a short stopover or even a quiet weekend getaway, Whyalla delivers more than expected. It’s not crowded, has a strong sense of local pride, and gives you space to slow down. If you’re planning a road trip up the Spencer Gulf, Whyalla is definitely worth the detour. We go again for summer vacation with friends.

Overlooking the Spencer Gulf and City of Whyalla, Hummock Hill was the site of the first European settlement at the turn of the twentieth century. During World War Two it serviced as a gun battery and observation post, development of the lookout utilised the old gun emplacements that can still be seen today. It is an important Aboriginal site. A one-way sealed road takes vehicles to the top of the hill. Hummock Hill is also a part of the City Walk Centenary Trail. City Walk Centenary Trail includes Hummock Hill lookout and all interpretive signs along the way.

This lookout is an important spot to visit in Whyalla. It is too easy to get a very limited and possibly narrow perspective of this city if you dont get this litteral overview. From the one elevated spot you can view such a diverse scenery from the rusty coloured industrial area to the beautiful palm lined beachside park. Yes, Whyalla has some beautiful spots so dont miss them. There plenty of interesting Australian history to read here too which our children would be enriched to know. Whyalla's role in our security during world war 2. Why we needed to build ships and how enough water was supplied to sustain the growing city. A great place to stop and take in some history and lovely and at least...
