Schloss Hellbrunn, absolutely stunning! Schloss Hellbrunn is a magical experience from start to finish. The palace itself is rich in history, but what truly sets it apart are the beautiful gardens and the famous trick fountains. Walking through the grounds feels like stepping into a fairytale—lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and peaceful water features everywhere you look. The fountains are a delightful surprise, especially if you’re with family or friends; the playful spirit of the design really comes to life. The trick fountains at Schloss Hellbrunn are nothing short of enchanting—and mischievous! Imagine this: Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus, the mastermind behind the palace, inviting his esteemed guests to a grand outdoor dinner. The setting is serene, surrounded by elegant stone seats under a canopy of trees, with the soft sounds of water flowing nearby. As the guests laugh and dine, feeling completely at ease, a sly smile plays on Sittikus’s face. With the flick of a hidden switch, jets of water shoot up from the ground, soaking the unsuspecting nobles! The sheer delight he must have felt, watching his guests jump and laugh in surprise, is palpable even centuries later. The fountains are placed in the most unexpected spots, springing to life without warning—underneath benches, near statues, and even along the walkways. It’s easy to see why Sittikus loved these playful pranks, as they break up the elegance with laughter and joy. Every corner of the palace grounds holds the potential for a surprise, making you feel like a participant in a centuries-old game of whimsy. It’s a uniquely interactive experience that blends beauty, history, and fun in the most delightful way! The audio guide was informative and engaging, giving great context to the architectural beauty and historical significance of the palace. The views of the surrounding mountains add an extra layer of beauty, making it the perfect spot for photos. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a picturesque escape, Schloss Hellbrunn is an absolute must-visit in Salzburg! Don't miss it if you're in the area! Salzburg, Austria

My visit to Hellbrunn Palace in 2018 was nothing short of enchanting, earning it a well-deserved five-star rating. From the moment I arrived at this architectural gem located just outside Salzburg, I was transported to a world of whimsy and wonder. The palace's exterior, adorned with beautiful Renaissance and Baroque elements, set the stage for the grandeur that awaited within. However, it was the palace's unique trick fountains and expansive gardens that truly stole the show. Exploring the trick fountains was an absolute delight. As I walked through the gardens, unsuspecting streams of water would playfully surprise and splash me at unexpected moments. The ingenuity and craftsmanship behind these fountains, designed to entertain and amuse guests, left me in awe. It was a delightful experience that brought out the inner child in me. The meticulously landscaped gardens surrounding Hellbrunn Palace were a true paradise. From serene ponds and charming statues to lush greenery and blooming flowers, every corner of the gardens exuded natural beauty. It was a peaceful haven where I could immerse myself in the tranquility of nature and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The guided tour of the palace itself was informative and engaging, providing insights into its history and architectural significance. The opulent interior, adorned with elegant furnishings and intricate details, showcased the luxurious lifestyle of the palace's former inhabitants. The palace staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to share stories about the palace and its unique features. Their passion for preserving the palace's heritage and ensuring an enjoyable visit was evident throughout. In conclusion, Hellbrunn Palace is a true gem that combines history, artistry, and whimsical charm in a truly captivating way. It offers an unforgettable experience that will leave visitors of all ages with a sense of awe and wonder. I wholeheartedly give it a five-star rating and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Salzburg.

Definitely worth a visit! Inside the palace was slightly underwhelming, not as much to see or learn as I had hoped. But the grounds are lovely, even though we visited on a somewhat rainy day. The flower gardens are quite nice, but the highlight was the "trick fountains." The audioguide provides a lot of interesting information about the fountains, which apparently were in vogue during this particular period; many other estates that had trick fountains at one point removed them when they went out of favor. But thankfully, they remain at Schloss Hellbrunn for visitors to enjoy. The funniest thing to us was that they were installed by the Archbishop, who apparently got quite a kick out of getting his guests wet when they came to be entertained for the evening. It's also pretty amazing what they were able to accomplish just using water power, back before the technology was anything like it is today. We enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of fountains and the mechanisms that make them work. It's quite a fun afternoon, although I can imagine it would be much more enjoyable during a warm day than during the winter months. (I'm actually not even sure they continue to show the fountains during the winter.) We rode the bus to and from Salzburg using the Salzburg card, and it was easy.

Just a short 30 minute trip south from the Salzburg Hauptbanhof on the #25 bus, we found this unique outing. We pre-booked our € 13,50 tickets and took the audio tour of the WasserSpielen. The tour launched promptly at the assigned time and was a walking tour at our own pace with a hand held listening device to guide us. The jaunt was a mix of history and playfulness that was well worth the cost of admission. Interactive staff demonstrated several hidden features of the fountains adding a personal feel to the audio tour. At the tours conclusion, Heather and I took time to climb the path upwards and take in the scenic vistas the overlooks offered. Upon our descent, we wandered to experience the grounds, including the ponds and tree lined paths. We chose not to take advantage of the folklore museum or the Palace exhibition which were included with our tickets. Realistically on a nice day you could spend at least 3-4 hours between the water fountain tour and exploring the grounds (add another 2 hours for the exhibitions we omitted). There was a path leading to the Salzburg zoo which we chose not to take but I suspect adding that to your day would round out the experience. We would recommend this excursion to anyone visiting the Salzburg area on a nice weather day.
